Milford, NJ — The tight-knit community of Milford and surrounding areas is mourning the loss of Demetrios “Jimmy” K. Gatanis, a respected restaurateur, devoted family man, and longtime local figure who passed away on Friday, June 27, 2025, at Hunterdon Medical Center in Raritan Township, New Jersey. He was 79 years old.

Born on June 13, 1946, in the picturesque village of Diefha on the Greek island of Chios, Jimmy immigrated to the United States in 1970 with dreams of building a better life. Settling in Milford, he quickly became a pillar of the community, known not only for his entrepreneurial spirit but for his warmth and generosity.

For four decades, Jimmy co-owned and operated the beloved Mountain View Chalet restaurant in Asbury, New Jersey, alongside his nephew, Demos Fokas. The eatery was a local favorite, cherished for its welcoming atmosphere and Jimmy’s friendly smile that greeted every guest. A passionate cook, he was renowned for his skill in the kitchen and his spirited participation in regional soup competitions, making the Chalet a staple destination for food lovers.

Before establishing the Mountain View Chalet, Jimmy also owned “The Silver Star” restaurant in Manhattan, further cementing his legacy in the culinary world.

Beyond his business success, Jimmy was a committed member of the Agia Markella Greek Orthodox Church and the Northern Chios Society of Pelineon in Kenoza Lake, NY. His devotion to his Greek heritage was reflected in frequent visits to his homeland and his generous support for charitable causes both in Greece and the United States.

Family was at the heart of Jimmy’s life. He and his wife Eleni, his partner of 52 years, built a loving home together. He is survived by their three children—Kaliopi Nicolaou, Michael Gatanis, and Kostas Gatanis—and four adored grandchildren. His sisters, Joanne Fokas and Elaine Lioudis, and numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family also remember him fondly.
