BRIGHTON, MICHIGAN — July 3, 2025 — A tragic workplace accident has claimed the life of Ryan Starnes, a 23-year-old father and underground utility laborer, who was fatally struck by an excavator bucket while working on a construction site beneath the I-96 underpass on Grand River Avenue in Brighton Township.

The devastating incident occurred Monday afternoon when Starnes was working in a trench. Investigators say the excavator operator, unaware of Starnes’ presence, accidentally moved the bucket and struck him. Despite immediate emergency response and transportation to the University of Michigan Hospital, Starnes succumbed to his injuries.

Ryan’s fiancée, Ky-El McRae, shared her heartbreak and described him as a devoted father who prioritized their young son’s well-being.

“Every single night, he would come home from work and cuddle with our son, hold him, and play with him. He worked really hard to make sure Luke was okay and had everything he needed.”

Their son Luke, 6 years old, is nonverbal and has autism. Ryan had been the family’s sole provider, dedicating five years to his labor-intensive job to secure a better future for his family.

Ryan’s grandfather, who was the on-site foreman during the accident, was present at the tragic moment and provided comfort to Ryan in his final moments. Family and friends remember him as a loving, generous young man who brought light and joy to everyone around him.

The Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration (MIOSHA) is conducting a thorough investigation into the accident, reviewing the safety protocols and equipment operation involved. The tragedy highlights the dangers faced by construction and utility workers, and advocates are calling for stronger safety enforcement to prevent similar incidents.

The Brighton community has come together to support Ryan’s family during this difficult time, with fundraisers launched to assist with funeral expenses and to provide for young Luke’s care.

A candlelight vigil and memorial service are being planned to honor Ryan’s life, celebrating the devoted father and hardworking young man whose life was cut far too short.
