RUIDOSO, NM — July 2025 — A devastating flash flood swept through the scenic area of Ruidoso on Tuesday, resulting in the tragic deaths of two young children, siblings Sebastian and Charlotte Trotter. The children, ages 7 and 4 respectively, were swept away while on a family camping trip, leaving their community and loved ones heartbroken.

The Trotter family, who are stationed at Fort Bliss in El Paso, Texas, had traveled to Ruidoso seeking a peaceful outdoor retreat. Their camping trip took a tragic turn when sudden heavy rains caused flash flooding, turning calm streams into raging torrents. The floodwaters swept through the campground with alarming speed and force, catching the family off guard.

According to family members, the parents sustained injuries as they desperately tried to protect and rescue their children during the flood. Both parents are currently hospitalized in El Paso, recovering from injuries incurred in their brave efforts to save Sebastian and Charlotte. Sadly, despite their heroic attempts, the children were swept away and later found deceased.

The flood also claimed the lives of two family dogs, adding to the overwhelming grief faced by the Trotter family. The loss of beloved pets has further deepened the heartbreak for the family already coping with this unimaginable tragedy.

Local emergency responders and volunteers quickly mobilized to the scene upon reports of the flooding. Search and rescue operations were hampered by dangerous conditions, but officials worked tirelessly to locate the missing children. Unfortunately, the ferocity of the floodwaters left little chance for survival once Sebastian and Charlotte were caught in the current.

The family has asked for privacy as they navigate this devastating loss, while community groups have organized vigils and support initiatives to assist them during this difficult time.

Weather officials have issued warnings about the potential for further flash flooding in the area and urge residents and visitors to exercise caution during storms. This incident is a stark reminder of the deadly power of nature and the importance of heeding weather alerts.

As the Trotter family begins the difficult process of grieving and healing, the community stands united in sorrow and solidarity. The loss of Sebastian and Charlotte is a heartbreaking reminder of how quickly life can change and the importance of supporting one another in times of crisis.
