Milwaukee Night Turns Deadly: Two Men Killed in Downtown Shooting Identified as Beloved Community Members
MILWAUKEE, WI — July 12, 2025 — A night of celebration turned to tragedy early Saturday morning when gunfire erupted near the bustling 600 block of North Water Street in downtown Milwaukee. The 12:02 a.m. shooting claimed the lives of two men, now identified as Antwan Hogans, 52, affectionately known as “Tweezy,” and Kevin Lewis, 39, known to many as “Bubbs.”
Milwaukee Police responded swiftly to the scene following reports of shots fired in an area crowded with nightlife activity. Officers arrived to find both men suffering from gunshot wounds. Despite efforts by first responders, both victims were pronounced dead at the scene.
Chaos in the Heart of the City
Eyewitnesses described a horrifying scene as the sounds of gunshots shattered the festive atmosphere. “It was packed down here. One second everything was normal, then we just heard multiple pops,” said one witness. “People were screaming, running, hitting the ground—no one knew what was going on.”
Police quickly cordoned off the area, and nearby bars and restaurants were placed on temporary lockdown. Investigators worked through the night interviewing witnesses and reviewing security footage from surrounding businesses.
No arrests have been made as of Saturday evening, but detectives say they are actively pursuing leads.
A Community in Grief
The loss of Hogans and Lewis has left a deep void in the Milwaukee community. Both men were well known and deeply loved by friends, family, and neighbors.
Antwan “Tweezy” Hogans was described as a gentle soul with a huge heart. “He was always smiling, always cracking jokes, and just had this energy about him,” said longtime friend Derek Matthews. “He looked out for everyone.”
Kevin “Bubbs” Lewis was known for his loyalty and generosity. “He was one of those people who would help you even if he didn’t have much himself,” said his cousin Angela Lewis. “He had a big heart. Everyone loved Bubbs.”
Both men leave behind children and grieving families who are now planning memorials to honor their lives.
Officials Respond
Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson expressed sorrow over the shooting and called for unity in the fight against rising gun violence. “This senseless tragedy has claimed the lives of two beloved members of our community,” the mayor said in a statement. “We must continue working together—law enforcement, community leaders, and residents—to put an end to the violence that is tearing families apart.”
Local leaders and anti-violence advocates are urging anyone with information to come forward.
