DEADLY SHOOTING IN NORTH MINNEAPOLIS: 19-Year-Old Killed Overnight, Gunman at Large as Police Seek Public’s Help
MINNEAPOLIS, MN — A tragic and deadly shooting early Sunday morning has left a 19-year-old man dead and a neighborhood shaken, as Minneapolis Police launch an active homicide investigation in the city’s North Side.
At approximately 3:09 a.m. on July 20, 2025, officers from the Fourth Precinct responded to 911 calls reporting gunfire in the area of Mississippi Drive North and Lyndale Avenue North. When officers arrived, they found a young male victim suffering from a life-threatening gunshot wound.
Despite efforts to perform life-saving medical treatment at the scene, the victim succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead shortly after. His identity has not yet been publicly released. According to the Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office, the victim’s name, along with the official cause and manner of death, will be shared after next of kin are notified.
The suspect had fled the scene before officers arrived, and no arrests have been made. Investigators from the Minneapolis Police Department’s homicide division, along with forensic science personnel, responded to gather evidence and document the scene.
MPD Chief Brian O’Hara issued a public statement Sunday morning, assuring the community that a full and thorough investigation is underway.
“Investigators are working diligently to gather information and learn what happened,” Chief O’Hara said. “Anyone who has information should reach out and provide that information. We are working to do everything we can to find justice for this victim and his family.”
The case has been assigned case number 25-201544. While no motive has yet been confirmed, authorities are reviewing surveillance footage from surrounding buildings and canvassing the area for witnesses. Police say the investigation is ongoing and urge anyone who saw or heard anything suspicious to speak up.
Community members in the North Side neighborhood are already reacting with grief and frustration. This latest act of violence marks another heartbreaking chapter in a summer that has already seen far too many young lives lost to gunfire.
“We’re tired. We’re tired of waking up to this,” said one resident who lives a block from the crime scene. “That could’ve been my nephew. That could’ve been anyone’s child. When will it stop?”
Police are now turning to the public for help.
