Tragedy in South Augusta: 14-Year-Old Deandre Howell Killed, Three Others Injured in Multi-Scene Shooting
SOUTH AUGUSTA, GA – A devastating wave of violence shattered a quiet Sunday evening in South Augusta, leaving a 14-year-old boy dead and three others injured in what authorities described as a chaotic, multi-scene shooting near Meadowbrook Drive and Deans Bridge Road.
According to the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office, the incident unfolded shortly before dusk on Sunday, August 3, 2025. Multiple gunshots rang out at two separate locations within close proximity — the parking lot of Advance Auto Parts and a nearby Texaco gas station — creating confusion and panic among bystanders.
14-year-old Deandre Howell of Augusta was fatally shot in the 3400 block of Deans Bridge Road, according to Coroner Mark Bowen. Howell was pronounced dead at the scene, sending shockwaves through his family, friends, and the wider South Augusta community. His life, full of potential, was tragically cut short in a senseless act of gun violence.
Multiple Victims, One Community in Grief
Three other victims — all believed to be teenagers — were also caught in the crossfire. One remains in critical condition at a local hospital, while the remaining two sustained injuries that are described as non-life-threatening. Their names have not yet been released by officials, pending notification of families.
The violence appeared to involve multiple shooters, and witnesses described hearing a barrage of gunfire before seeing two of the victims collapse outside the auto parts store. Just moments later, more shots rang out across the street at the gas station. A vehicle believed to be involved was also struck by bullets before crossing over toward the nearby IGA grocery store.
“Water Boys” Targeted?
Several witnesses have stated that the victims were part of a group known locally as the “Water Boys,” a collection of young people who often sell bottled water to passing motorists at busy intersections. While community members have praised their entrepreneurial spirit, some have expressed concern over their safety in high-traffic areas. As of this writing, authorities have not confirmed the connection between the victims and the Water Boys group.
Authorities Investigating Motive and Suspects
Investigators are working to piece together the timeline and motive behind the attack. No suspects have been arrested as of Monday morning, and law enforcement is calling on the public for assistance.
“This is an unspeakable tragedy,” one officer stated. “We need the community’s help. If you saw something, say something.”
Anyone with information about the shooting is urged to contact the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office or Crime Stoppers at (706) 821-1080. Tips can remain anonymous and may be eligible for a cash reward.
Community Reaction and Grief
The neighborhood has been left shaken. A growing memorial of candles, handwritten notes, and teddy bears has begun to form near the location where Deandre Howell lost his life. Friends describe him as a funny, kind-hearted teen who often spoke about wanting to help his family and one day open a business of his own.
“He had dreams, big ones,” said a family friend. “He was just a kid trying to do something positive.”
As the investigation continues, the Augusta community is grappling with its latest loss to youth violence — and calling for change.
