BRPD Investigating Fatal Shooting of 23-Year-Old Zachary Lewis at Jefferson Highway Apartment

 

 

BATON ROUGE, LA — The Baton Rouge Police Department (BRPD) is actively investigating the fatal shooting of Zachary Lewis, a 23-year-old man who was tragically gunned down at an apartment complex along Jefferson Highway.

According to officials, the incident occurred on the evening of Saturday, August 3, 2025. Officers were dispatched to the scene in the 7800 block of Jefferson Highway after receiving reports of gunfire shortly before 9:30 PM. Upon arrival, first responders discovered Lewis suffering from at least one gunshot wound inside one of the apartment units.

Emergency medical personnel attempted life-saving measures, but Lewis was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity was confirmed by the East Baton Rouge Parish Coroner’s Office later that evening.

Ongoing Investigation

The motive behind the shooting remains under investigation. Detectives have not yet released any information regarding possible suspects or what led up to the deadly encounter. Investigators are canvassing the area for surveillance footage and potential witnesses, and they urge anyone with knowledge of the incident to come forward.

“This is an ongoing and active homicide investigation,” a BRPD spokesperson said during a press briefing. “We are asking anyone who may have seen or heard anything suspicious in the area to contact our homicide division directly or make an anonymous report through Crime Stoppers.”

Authorities have not confirmed whether Lewis was a resident of the apartment complex or if he was visiting someone at the time of the shooting. Police are also working to determine whether the incident was targeted or random in nature.

Community Reeling From Loss

News of the young man’s death has sent shockwaves through the Baton Rouge community. Friends and family have taken to social media to express their grief, describing Lewis as “kind-hearted,” “hard-working,” and “a loyal friend.”

“He didn’t deserve this,” one friend posted online. “Zach had big dreams and a lot of love to give. He was always trying to better himself and help those around him. Our hearts are broken.”

Several community members gathered near the complex Sunday morning to leave candles, flowers, and messages in remembrance of Lewis, whose life was cut tragically short.
