GULF SHORES, AL — A heartbreaking incident unfolded in Gulf Shores as authorities confirmed the death of a woman whose vehicle became submerged in a retention pond on Sunday morning, leaving the community shocked and mourning.

According to the Gulf Shores Police Department, emergency crews were dispatched to the scene near the intersection of Coastal Gateway Boulevard and Waterway West around 6:45 a.m., following reports of a car that had veered off the roadway and entered a large retention pond.

Upon arrival, first responders discovered a vehicle completely submerged in the water. Divers were immediately deployed, and after an intense recovery operation, they were able to locate and extract the vehicle. Tragically, a deceased adult female was found inside. Her identity has not yet been released, pending notification of next of kin.

Investigation Underway

Authorities are currently investigating the circumstances that led to the accident. While the exact cause remains unknown, early indicators suggest the driver may have lost control of the vehicle for reasons still under review—possibly due to medical distress, distraction, or mechanical failure. Weather conditions at the time were reported to be clear.

“We are working to determine what happened in the moments leading up to the vehicle entering the pond,” said Gulf Shores Police Chief Edward Delmore. “Our hearts go out to the family and loved ones of the woman involved in this terrible tragedy.”

The Baldwin County Coroner’s Office is assisting in the investigation, and an autopsy will be conducted to determine the official cause of death.

The tragic news has struck a somber chord throughout Gulf Shores, a tightly knit coastal community known for its hospitality and safety. Residents who live near the scene expressed sorrow and concern, with many placing flowers at the edge of the retention pond as a tribute to the life lost.

“We saw flashing lights early in the morning, and then heard about what happened,” said one nearby resident. “It’s just awful. Our thoughts are with her family.”

City officials acknowledged the emotional toll of the incident and assured the public that any necessary road safety measures or signage evaluations would be reviewed as part of the investigation.
