EAST HAVEN, CT — A tragic accident on Wednesday afternoon has left the East Haven community grieving the loss of 65-year-old Frederic Sternberg, a longtime resident known for his warmth and friendliness. Authorities say Sternberg died after falling from his electric bike in a quiet neighborhood, in an incident that was as sudden as it was devastating.

Accident Details

According to the East Haven Police Department, the accident occurred at approximately 3:25 p.m. on Wednesday, August 13, 2025, near the intersection of Mill Street and Foxon Road (Route 80). Surveillance footage shows Sternberg stopping to pick up a wooden 2×4 from the roadway. Moments later, while attempting to balance the board in one hand and continue riding, he lost control of the e-bike and tumbled down an embankment.

Witnesses reported that Sternberg struck the ground with significant force. A passerby quickly rushed to his aid and performed CPR until emergency responders arrived. He was transported to Yale New Haven Hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

Police confirmed that no other vehicles or individuals were involved in the crash. The electric bike has been seized as part of the investigation to determine if any mechanical issues played a role.

Community Shock and Remembrance

The news of Sternberg’s passing spread quickly across East Haven, prompting an outpouring of grief from friends, neighbors, and local officials.

“He was one of those people who could make your day better just by saying hello,” said neighbor Pauline Richards. “He loved being outdoors and riding his bike. To lose him in such an unexpected way is heartbreaking.”

Sternberg, a retired small business owner, had lived in East Haven for more than 30 years. He was known for his community spirit, his love of cycling, and his devotion to his family. He is survived by his wife, two adult children, and several grandchildren.

Mayor Joseph A. Carfora issued a statement Thursday, offering condolences to the family:

“On behalf of the Town of East Haven, I extend our deepest sympathies to the family of Frederic Sternberg. This is a tragic loss, and we stand together in support of his loved ones during this very difficult time.”

Electric Bike Safety Concerns

This fatal accident has renewed discussion about electric bike safety in Connecticut. E-bikes have surged in popularity for their speed, convenience, and eco-friendly benefits, but they can also present risks — especially for older riders or those carrying objects while riding.

The Connecticut Department of Transportation recommends that all e-bike riders:

  • Always wear a helmet
  • Avoid carrying heavy or unbalanced loads while riding
  • Keep both hands on the handlebars
  • Undergo safety training to handle higher e-bike speeds

Local authorities are reminding riders to prioritize safety and remain alert to road hazards, even on familiar routes.

Funeral and Memorial Plans

The Sternberg family has announced that a public memorial service will be held at East Haven Memorial Funeral Home next week. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the East Haven Community Foundation in Frederic’s memory, to support senior programs and community activities.

As investigators finalize their report, East Haven residents continue to share stories, photos, and memories of Sternberg, ensuring his legacy of kindness and community spirit lives on.
