CLAREMONT, N.C. — August 16, 2025 — A tragic single-vehicle crash along Interstate 40 East near Claremont claimed the life of a Black Mountain woman on Saturday morning, prompting an hours-long closure of the busy highway as investigators worked at the scene.
The Crash
According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, the collision occurred at approximately 11:10 a.m. on I-40 East near North Oxford Street (Exit 135) in Catawba County.
Troopers reported that a 2007 Ford Focus, driven by 47-year-old Kimberly Anne Brown of Black Mountain, veered off the left side of the highway before striking a guardrail. The vehicle then re-entered the road, left the right shoulder, and crashed into a tree.
Emergency crews responded immediately, but Brown suffered catastrophic injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigation Findings
Highway Patrol investigators have so far determined that speed and impairment do not appear to have been contributing factors in the crash. Authorities continue to review roadway conditions, vehicle data, and other possible influences, but no signs of foul play or reckless driving were reported.
The roadway was temporarily shut down in the aftermath of the crash, leading to traffic delays as first responders worked to clear debris and reconstruct the accident.
Victim Identified
Officials identified the victim as Kimberly Anne Brown, 47, of Black Mountain, a small town in Buncombe County. Brown’s passing has left family, friends, and neighbors in shock, as they now mourn the unexpected loss.
Community and Safety Concerns
Fatal single-vehicle crashes are a persistent concern in North Carolina. According to state transportation data, roadway departures — when a vehicle runs off the side of the road — account for nearly half of all traffic fatalities statewide.
The crash near Claremont has once again drawn attention to the dangers of highway driving, even under seemingly normal conditions. Investigators emphasized that moments of distraction, sudden health issues, or road hazards can all contribute to tragic outcomes.
What Happens Next
The Highway Patrol will continue its investigation, though no charges are expected in the incident given that only one vehicle was involved. Authorities will prepare a final report once all factors have been reviewed.
In the meantime, the community of Black Mountain grieves the loss of Kimberly Anne Brown — a life cut short in a sudden and devastating crash.
