ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. — The Rocky Mount community is reeling after a deadly shooting early Sunday morning that claimed the life of 24-year-old Kedar Darden and left four others injured. Police confirmed the incident unfolded around 6:00 a.m. in the 2100 block of Benvenue Road, an area now marked by grief and unanswered questions.
Police Release Victim’s Identity
Rocky Mount Police identified the deceased as Kedar Darden, a young man whose life was tragically cut short in the violence. Officers pronounced Darden dead at the scene after responding to reports of gunfire.
“Our hearts go out to the family of Mr. Darden,” the Rocky Mount Police Department said in a statement, calling the shooting “a devastating act that has shaken our city.”
Four Others Injured in the Shooting
In addition to the loss of Darden, four other individuals sustained injuries in the shooting:
- 27-year-old Black female – treated and released
- 28-year-old Black female – treated and released
- 24-year-old Black male – treated and released
- 32-year-old Black male – remains hospitalized in fair condition
Authorities confirmed that three of the victims have since been discharged from medical care, while the 32-year-old male continues to recover in the hospital.
Community on Edge
The shooting has left Rocky Mount residents shaken, with many calling for peace and an end to gun violence in the city. Friends and neighbors described Darden as a young man full of life and potential, whose loss is now deeply felt by those who knew him.
“This is becoming too common,” said one community member who lives near the scene. “We need answers, and we need to feel safe again.”
Investigation Remains Active
Police have not released information on possible suspects or motives behind the shooting. The 2100 block of Benvenue Road, which was briefly closed off during the investigation, has since been reopened.
