EVANSVILLE, Ind. — The Evansville community is rallying around Officer Samuel Taylor, a dedicated police officer who was critically injured early Sunday morning after being shot during an officer-involved incident. The teenager accused in the shooting, Jailani Chew, appeared in court Tuesday and expressed remorse for his actions.
Officer Samuel Taylor’s Condition
Officer Taylor, 34, was shot around 1:30 a.m. Sunday. According to Evansville Police Chief, Taylor is now stable but may have lost use of his legs. He was struck with two bullets—one grazing his head and another entering near his arm. Despite the severity of his injuries, the officer’s courage and dedication have inspired an outpouring of support from fellow officers and the broader community.
Suspect in Custody
Eighteen-year-old Jailani Chew, the suspect in the shooting, was also injured by officers returning fire. After receiving treatment at a hospital, Chew will be booked into Vanderburgh County Jail on two counts of attempted murder with a $1 million bond.
During his first court appearance, Chew apologized to anyone affected by the shooting and requested additional medical treatment for hand injuries. He claimed difficulty feeding himself while in custody, but the Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office (VCSO) released surveillance footage showing him receiving care from jail staff.
Law Enforcement Responds
Sheriff Noah Robinson emphasized the importance of correcting misinformation:
“In today’s social media environment, false claims spread quickly. We must rely on facts to maintain trust in law enforcement.”
Detective Aaron McCormick praised the sheriff’s office and refuted Chew’s claims:
“I know the staff run the facility professionally. These allegations were completely false and shocking.”
Community Support and Nationwide Attention
The Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) has mobilized support for Officer Taylor and his family. FOP President Aaron McCormick said:
“Officer Taylor paid the ultimate sacrifice protecting our community. Now it’s our turn to take care of him.”
Local residents, law enforcement agencies, and national organizations have contributed to fundraising and support efforts, demonstrating unity in the face of tragedy.
The Human Toll
Officer Taylor’s family and colleagues describe him as a committed public servant and a devoted father and husband. The community has rallied to ensure he receives the care and assistance he needs during recovery.

As legal proceedings continue for Jailani Chew, the Evansville community continues to honor Officer Samuel Taylor’s bravery and service. His story is a reminder of the sacrifices law enforcement officers make daily and the resilience required in the face of life-altering events.
