DALLAS, Texas — Authorities have officially named Joshua Jahn, 29, as the gunman responsible for Wednesday’s deadly sniper-style shooting outside a federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility in Dallas.
The violent attack left four people dead, including Jahn, and has intensified nationwide discussions about security risks at federal offices and during the transport of immigration detainees.
What Happened
The shooting unfolded late Wednesday morning as ICE personnel and contractors were overseeing a detainee transfer. Witnesses reported a sudden eruption of gunfire from a hidden position near the complex. Panic quickly spread as officers shouted for cover and civilians fled the area.
Three people were killed in addition to Jahn, who died after being engaged by responding law enforcement officers. Several others sustained injuries, ranging from cuts caused by shattered glass to more serious gunshot wounds, and were taken to nearby hospitals.
Identification and Investigation
Federal officials confirmed Jahn’s identity after notifying his family Wednesday night. Investigators say he acted alone, but the FBI and Department of Homeland Security continue to investigate his background, searching for possible motives and any prior warning signs.
“This was a deliberate attack on a federal facility,” said Chad Yarbrough, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI’s Dallas office. “Our goal now is to fully understand how this was planned and to ensure accountability.”
Broader Security Concerns
The incident has prompted ICE to initiate an immediate review of its nationwide security procedures, particularly during detainee transfers, which experts note are vulnerable moments for officers and the public.
“Federal agents are trained for a variety of threats, but sniper attacks exploit open space in ways that are difficult to control,” said Mark Caldwell, a former security advisor. “This tragedy should be a wake-up call.”
Community and Official Response
Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson condemned the attack as “senseless violence that has shaken our city.” Local leaders and advocacy groups urged calm while families of the victims are notified and the investigation moves forward.
The ICE facility was closed Thursday as agents processed the scene, with nearby schools and businesses resuming normal operations after a temporary lockdown during the shooting.
Victims’ Names Pending
Officials have not yet released the names of the three victims killed in the attack, citing ongoing family notifications. All were believed to be employees or contractors working with ICE at the time of the shooting.
