PEORIA, Ill. — A 23-year-old man from Peoria has been taken into custody after authorities say he shot his ex-girlfriend in both feet as part of a disturbing attempt to impress another woman.
Police identified the suspect as Jaquon Timothy, who is now facing a felony charge of aggravated battery with a firearm. The incident, which investigators described as both violent and calculated, has sparked outrage across the Peoria community.
The Incident
According to police reports, the shooting occurred at approximately 1:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 19, in the 300 block of West Starr Street in South Peoria. Officers rushed to the scene after receiving multiple reports of gunfire.
When they arrived, they found a young woman suffering from gunshot wounds to both of her feet. She was immediately transported to a nearby hospital, where doctors treated her for non-life-threatening injuries. Authorities have not released her name.
Motive: A Disturbing “Prove My Love” Pledge
Investigators soon uncovered chilling details about the motive behind the attack. According to court documents, Timothy had allegedly told his new girlfriend that he would shoot his ex-girlfriend to prove how serious he was about their relationship.
Police later obtained text messages from Timothy’s phone that appeared to confirm this plan. In the messages, he allegedly stated his intentions and admitted to carrying out the act.
Timothy’s new girlfriend also cooperated with authorities, telling police that he had confessed to her shortly after the shooting.

If convicted of aggravated battery with a firearm, Timothy faces a potential sentence of up to 30 years in a state correctional facility.
