Baltimore, MD — October 3, 2025
The Baltimore Ravens and the entire NFL community are mourning the sudden death of former defensive tackle Arthur Jones, a Super Bowl champion who helped deliver Baltimore one of its most iconic victories. Jones was just 39 years old.
The Ravens confirmed his passing on Thursday, releasing an emotional statement that reflected not only his contributions as a player but also his enduring presence as a teammate, brother, and friend.
“We are terribly saddened to learn of Arthur Jones’ sudden passing,” Ravens General Manager Eric DeCosta said. “Arthur’s presence was a gift to everyone he encountered. His big, bright smile, infectious energy and eternal positivity created a presence that continuously uplifted others. He was kind, courteous and enthusiastic — always displaying a love for family, teammates and friends.”
From Syracuse to Super Bowl Champion
Drafted in the fifth round in 2010 out of Syracuse University, Jones carved out a role on one of the most feared defenses in football. Known for his strength in the trenches, he became a consistent contributor on the defensive line and earned respect from teammates for his relentless work ethic.
His breakout moment came during the 2012 season, when the Ravens stormed through the playoffs and captured Super Bowl XLVII with a dramatic 34-31 victory over the San Francisco 49ers. Jones sacked quarterback Colin Kaepernick during the game, a play that symbolized his importance in Baltimore’s championship run.
NFL Career Beyond Baltimore
Following his four seasons with the Ravens, Jones signed with the Indianapolis Colts in 2014, bringing veteran leadership to their defensive front. Though injuries shortened his time in Indianapolis, he was remembered as a locker room leader and steady presence. He finished his NFL career with a brief stint in Washington before retiring in 2017.
In total, Jones appeared in 84 games across eight seasons, recording 173 tackles and 10 sacks.
A Brother, A Mentor, A Champion
Football was just one chapter of Arthur Jones’ life story. He was the eldest in a family of remarkable athletes, guiding his younger brothers, Jon Jones and Chandler Jones, through their own journeys to stardom.
Jon became one of the most decorated fighters in UFC history, while Chandler went on to be a three-time Pro Bowl defensive end in the NFL. Arthur, often described as the “anchor” of the family, was credited with setting the example for his siblings’ discipline and drive.
Remembered Beyond the Field
While Jones’ on-field contributions made him a champion, it was his personality that left the deepest mark. Teammates and coaches often recalled his wide smile and upbeat attitude, saying he had a gift for lifting spirits no matter the situation.
“Arthur had a way of making everyone feel like family,” one former teammate said in a tribute post. “He played with heart, but more importantly, he lived with heart.”
Cause of Death Unknown
The Ravens did not release details surrounding Jones’ cause of death. Tributes, however, have already flooded social media, with fans and former players expressing heartbreak and sharing memories of the defensive tackle’s impact both on and off the field.
For Ravens fans, the image of Arthur Jones raising his arms in celebration as he left the field after a hard-fought win remains etched in memory. For his family, friends, and teammates, his legacy will be measured not just in victories but in the love and positivity he brought to those around him.
Jones is survived by his family, including his brothers Jon and Chandler, and by the countless teammates and fans whose lives he touched during his career.
As Baltimore and the NFL mourn his passing, one thing is certain: Arthur Jones will be remembered as a champion in every sense of the word.
