GREENSBURG, Pa. — Heartbreak has touched the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg as the campus community mourns the sudden and tragic loss of Alyssa Caldarelli, a senior student who passed away late Monday night following a car accident.
Alyssa, just months away from graduating, had been a cherished member of the Pitt-Greensburg family. Known for her quiet strength, kindness, and thoughtful presence, her death has left the campus community grieving deeply.
“It is with deep regret and sorrow that we inform you of the death of one of our Pitt-Greensburg students,” wrote University President Dr. Robert Gregerson, Dean of Student Life & Success Dr. Leigh Hoffman, and Director of Counseling Gayle Pamerleau in a message to students and faculty on Tuesday.
“Alyssa Caldarelli passed away last night after a car accident. Please keep Alyssa’s family and loved ones in your thoughts and prayers.”
As of Tuesday evening, local authorities have not released additional details regarding the circumstances of the crash. The investigation is ongoing.
A Campus Shaken by Loss
Alyssa was in her final year at Pitt-Greensburg, preparing to complete her degree and take her next steps into the world beyond campus. Her professors describe her as a dedicated student, while her peers remember her as someone whose gentle personality had a lasting impact.
“She was the kind of person who made the room feel calmer just by being in it,” said one of her classmates. “Always present, always kind.”
Those who knew her best say Alyssa was someone who never needed the spotlight to be felt. She showed up for others. She worked hard. And she carried herself with quiet confidence and care — the kind of presence that made others feel seen and safe.
Counseling and Community Support
The Pitt-Greensburg community has responded with compassion and care. Counseling services are being made available throughout the week to support students, staff, and faculty during this time of grief.
The Counseling Center is offering walk-in sessions on:
- Tuesday, October 7, from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m.
- Daily this week from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m.
Students can also schedule appointments by emailing GbgCounseling@pitt.edu or calling 724-836-7869.
“Grieving an unexpected death is never easy,” the university’s message read. “But in moments like these, our community comes together to support one another, to listen, and to heal.”
Professors have been encouraged to offer flexibility and understanding in the days ahead as students navigate the emotional weight of the loss.
Remembering Alyssa
While no formal memorial plans have yet been announced, university officials say they are working closely with Alyssa’s family and will update the campus community with information about any upcoming services or tributes.
Already, messages of remembrance are appearing across campus and social media. Friends and peers have shared stories, photos, and reflections that paint a picture of a young woman who led with heart.
“She had a gift,” said one faculty member. “The kind of student every professor hopes to teach — humble, curious, kind. Her absence will be felt in ways big and small.”
A Lasting Legacy
Alyssa Caldarelli’s time at Pitt-Greensburg was marked by grace, quiet strength, and compassion. Though her journey was tragically cut short, the imprint she left on her classmates, professors, and campus community will endure.
To her family, the university offers its deepest condolences. To her friends and loved ones, the community grieves alongside you.
And to Alyssa — thank you for your light. You will be missed, but never forgotten.
