Kibbutz Nir Oz, Israel – October 18, 2025 – Israel has confirmed the identification of Ronen Engel, one of the hostages kidnapped and murdered by Hamas terrorists nearly two years ago. His body was brought back to Israel last night, bringing closure to a tragic chapter that has weighed heavily on his family, friends, and the wider community.

Ronen Engel, 54, was kidnapped from his home at Kibbutz Nir Oz in southern Israel on October 7, 2023, during a brutal Hamas attack. While Ronen tragically lost his life, his wife Karina and two of their three children, Yuval and Mika, were released as part of a ceasefire-hostage release deal in November 2023.

Known for his ever-present smile and uplifting spirit, Ronen lived by the words inked on his arm: “Always look on the bright side of life.” Those words were not just a personal mantra—they reflected the way he touched the lives of everyone around him. Friends, neighbors, and colleagues remember him as someone who could lighten any room, inspire those in despair, and bring warmth wherever he went.

Ronen was a gifted photographer with a deep passion for motorcycles, but above all, he was a devoted father to his children: Tom, Yuval, and Mika. Beyond his family, he dedicated his life to helping others through volunteering with Magen David Adom, Israel’s national emergency medical service. On October 7, 2023, it was that same selfless instinct that drove him to take his medic bag and rush to assist others during the chaos that led to his kidnapping.

The Engel family endured unimaginable suffering during Ronen’s captivity. His wife, Karina, and their daughters endured months of uncertainty and fear before their eventual release, yet the grief over the loss of Ronen has left an indelible mark on their hearts. The community of Kibbutz Nir Oz, too, mourns deeply the loss of a man who embodied generosity, courage, and kindness.

Israeli officials have extended their condolences to Ronen’s family and the community. Leaders acknowledged his heroism, both as a medic and as a devoted father and community member, emphasizing the nation’s commitment to remembering those lost in terrorist attacks.

Ronen Engel’s life serves as a testament to resilience, love, and unwavering generosity. Even in the face of terror, his legacy of kindness, bravery, and optimism continues to inspire those who knew him.

May his memory forever be a blessing.
