TARRANT COUNTY, Texas — Authorities are continuing to investigate the tragic death of 26-year-old Jonathan Kinman, a man with special needs who was found buried in the backyard of his family’s home in Burleson. Officials say the cause and manner of his death have not yet been determined.
According to the Burleson Police Department, officers were called to a residence on the city’s south side after receiving a report that a man had been discovered unresponsive on the property. When investigators arrived, they uncovered what they described as a deeply distressing scene — Jonathan Kinman’s body buried behind the home where he lived with his parents.
Police have confirmed that Jonathan’s parents, John and Shannon Kinman, were taken into custody in connection with the ongoing investigation. While both have been charged with tampering with evidence and abuse of a corpse, authorities emphasize that the broader inquiry into Jonathan’s death remains active.
The Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office has completed an autopsy, but officials say they are still working to determine how and when Jonathan Kinman died. Toxicology reports and further forensic testing are pending, and the office has not yet ruled on the official cause of death.
Neighbors described the Kinmans as a quiet family who largely kept to themselves, making the discovery even more shocking. “You never imagine something like this happening next door,” one neighbor said. “We just can’t believe it.”
Burleson police said the investigation began after a tip prompted a welfare check at the residence. When officers arrived, inconsistencies in the parents’ statements led to further questioning — and eventually to the discovery of Jonathan’s body.
Detectives have not disclosed how long they believe Jonathan’s remains were buried or whether there were any signs of prior neglect or abuse. Authorities have also not stated whether additional charges may follow pending the results of the medical examiner’s findings.
“This is an active and sensitive investigation,” a department spokesperson said in a statement. “Our priority is ensuring that the full truth of what happened to Jonathan Kinman is brought to light.”
The case has shaken the Burleson community, with residents expressing both sorrow and outrage. Vigils have been held in memory of Jonathan, described by those who knew him as a kind and gentle soul who loved simple joys like drawing, listening to music, and spending time outdoors.
As investigators continue their work, the community waits for answers — and justice — in the heartbreaking case of Jonathan Kinman, whose life ended under circumstances that remain under investigation.
