Hopewell Township, OH – The Hopewell Township community is mourning the tragic loss of 73-year-old Diane McElfresh of Gratiot following a devastating three-vehicle crash on Wednesday evening. The Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating the circumstances surrounding the collision, which occurred around 5:10 PM on US 40 near Chapel Hill Road.
According to authorities and local reports, 74-year-old Kathryn Bollinger of Zanesville was driving a 2015 Chevrolet Malibu westbound when her vehicle struck a 2015 Honda Accord operated by 22-year-old Gage Summers of Coshocton. The Honda Accord had been stopped on US 40 while attempting to turn left into a private driveway.
Following the initial impact, Bollinger’s vehicle crossed left of center and collided with a 2014 Honda Odyssey driven by 38-year-old Samantha Mellott of Zanesville.
Tragically, Diane McElfresh, who was a passenger in Bollinger’s vehicle, was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities have not released additional details regarding her connection to the driver.
First responders from Falls Township Fire and EMS, Genesis Community Ambulance, Zanesville Fire and EMS, and the Ohio Department of Transportation arrived promptly to assist, secure the scene, and provide aid to those involved.
“The crash remains under active investigation as we work to determine the factors that contributed to this tragic event,” an Ohio State Highway Patrol spokesperson said.
Community members expressed deep sorrow over McElfresh’s passing. “It’s heartbreaking to lose someone so suddenly,” said a local resident. “Our thoughts are with her family and everyone affected by this incident.”
Authorities urge all drivers to exercise caution, especially during evening hours, and to remain attentive to stopped or turning vehicles on the roadway.
