Escanaba, MI — The Escanaba community is reeling from the sudden loss of 26-year-old Derec Allen Nelson, who passed away on October 17, 2025, following a two-vehicle crash on US-2/41 near the Highland Golf Course. The Delta County Sheriff’s Office is actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.

A Life Cut Short

Derec was a beloved member of the Escanaba community, known for his vibrant personality and unwavering kindness. Born on May 25, 1999, in Fort Riley, Kansas, to Craig L. and Valerie A. Nelson, Derec graduated from Escanaba High School and went on to earn a welding certificate from Bay de Noc Community College. He was employed as an apprentice for the Local 8 union and married Lauren Nelson on December 14, 2024, in Escanaba.

On the night of October 17, Derec was involved in a crash that left him entrapped in his vehicle. Emergency responders arrived promptly, but despite their efforts, Derec succumbed to his injuries. The Delta County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the cause of the crash, with assistance from the Michigan State Police, Escanaba Public Safety, Rampart EMS, and Ford River Fire.

Remembering Derec

Friends, family, and community members have shared heartfelt tributes to Derec, remembering him as a compassionate and caring individual who always had a smile and a helping hand for others. His love for hockey and his dedication to his family and community left a lasting impact on all who knew him.
