SHELBY COUNTY, Tenn — The Shelby County community is mourning the loss of 32-year-old Yesica Juarez, who was found deceased inside a Cordova home early Sunday morning. The tragic incident, which authorities are investigating as a domestic-related homicide, has once again brought attention to the devastating impact of domestic violence across the Mid-South.
According to the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO), deputies responded to a residence in the 6900 block of Manslick Road just before 3 a.m. on Sunday. When officers entered the home, they found Juarez suffering from a gunshot wound. Despite lifesaving efforts from emergency responders, she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities have since identified 33-year-old Marcus Dotson as the suspect. A warrant has been issued for his arrest on multiple charges, including first-degree murder, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and possession of a weapon by a convicted felon.
Dotson’s criminal history dates back over a decade. In 2013, he was convicted of stabbing a witness who testified against him in connection with a 2010 robbery case. The current investigation into Juarez’s death suggests that the shooting was a domestic violence-related incident, deepening the tragedy for those who knew her.
Community advocates have since spoken out about the ongoing crisis of domestic violence in the region. Ponya Dodson, founder of Beauty Beyond the Scars, a Cordova-based nonprofit supporting victims of abuse, expressed heartbreak over Juarez’s death.
“At this point we’re tired of hearing about domestic violence and people taking the lives of those they’re supposed to love,” Dodson said. “This one hit close to home because it happened right here in Cordova, where our nonprofit is based. It’s a very sad story, and it’s happening far too often.”
Dodson urged anyone facing domestic violence—or those aware of someone in danger—to seek help immediately.
“If you are in a domestic violence situation, please get out before you can’t get out,” she pleaded. “And if you know someone—whether it’s a friend or family member—don’t stay silent. Talk to them, help them find a way out, and let them know you want them to live another day.”
The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the homicide.
Family members described Yesica Juarez as a kind-hearted, loving woman who cared deeply for those around her. Friends and neighbors remembered her for her compassion and generosity, noting that she often put others before herself.
This tragic loss has shaken the Cordova community, renewing calls for stronger awareness, prevention, and support for domestic violence survivors.
As the investigation continues, the community honors the life of Yesica Juarez — a woman remembered for her warmth, strength, and the love she gave so freely.
May her memory be a reminder of the importance of compassion, awareness, and action in ending the cycle of domestic violence.
