Atlanta, GA — The city is mourning the devastating loss of 21-year-old Elajia Whitley, a vibrant and ambitious young woman whose life was tragically cut short in an act of domestic violence. The heartbreaking incident occurred Friday afternoon in Duluth, where Elajia was found fatally shot inside her car outside a shopping center parking lot.
According to Gwinnett County Police, the shooting is being investigated as a domestic-related homicide. Authorities say Elajia was targeted by someone she knew, believed to be her former partner. As of now, no arrests have been made, and police continue to search for the person responsible for her untimely death.
For those who knew her, Elajia’s passing has left a void that words cannot fill. Her family describes her as “a light that radiated love wherever she went.” They remember her laughter, her kindness, and the joy she brought to everyone in her life.
“Elajia has always resonated light, and the light that she was resonating came from her heart,” said her stepfather, Alfred Uzomah.
“She was always laughing, smiling, and being silly — enjoying life and the people around her,” recalled her brother, Davontay Whitley.
A Life Filled with Promise
Elajia was just beginning to build her future. She worked two jobs, earned a phlebotomy certificate, and was studying to become a surgical technician. Her family says she had a remarkable work ethic and a heart full of dreams. She wanted to make a difference in people’s lives through medicine, driven by compassion and dedication.
“I feel like a part of me is missing right now,” Davontay shared through tears. “I thought she would be here forever. She was so full of life, it just doesn’t seem real.”
Her aunt, Rhoda Alexander, described her as a young woman filled with love and potential — someone who gave freely of herself and saw the best in others.
“It’s so many beautiful things you can say about Elajia,” she said. “Unfortunately, the person that took her life didn’t see that. He didn’t see the beauty in her, the love that surrounded her. If he did, maybe he was jealous of it.”
A Tragic Reminder
Elajia’s family revealed that she had been in a difficult relationship and had even taken out protective orders against her partner in the past. They now hope her story will serve as a painful but important reminder for others living in similar circumstances.
“Let your family members know. Let your friends know. Let your coworkers know,” her aunt pleaded. “Make everybody aware of what’s happening around you so you can get help.”
“Anybody that goes through domestic violence — don’t give it a second chance. Don’t give it a second thought. Leave,” added her cousin, Gerald Johnson.
Remembering Elajia’s Light
Outside the BioLife Plasma Services center on Pleasant Hill Road, where Elajia worked, a growing memorial of flowers and candles stands as a tribute to her memory. Friends, coworkers, and loved ones have stopped by to grieve, to remember, and to say goodbye to the young woman who touched so many hearts in such a short time.
In a statement, BioLife Plasma Services expressed deep sorrow over her loss:
“We are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of our colleague, and we extend our heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and loved ones who have been affected. We are committed to the wellbeing of our employees and will continue to provide support to those affected and grieving.”
Elajia’s family says their mission now is to honor her memory by raising awareness about domestic violence — and helping others find the courage to walk away before it’s too late.
“If sharing Elajia’s story saves even one person, then her light will keep shining,” said her stepfather.
As the investigation continues, the Gwinnett County Police Department urges anyone with information to come forward by calling (770) 513-5300 or reaching out anonymously through Crime Stoppers at (404) 577-TIPS (8477).
Elajia Whitley will be remembered for her warmth, her laughter, and the hope she carried in her heart. She was a daughter, sister, and friend — a young woman with dreams that deserved to bloom. Her light, though dimmed on earth, will continue to shine in the hearts of those who loved her most.
