He carried with him the pride of his community and the love of those around him, leaving behind memories of laughter, friendship, and strength. His passing has left a deep sense of grief among his loved ones, who are now left holding on to the legacy of the gentle, caring person he was.

🕊️ May Tonio’s soul rest peacefully, and may his family and community find comfort in the outpouring of love and support surrounding them during this time of unimaginable loss.

The tragedy that claimed Tonio’s life unfolded on November 5, 2025, when Turtleford RCMP responded around 12:30 p.m. to a report of multiple injured individuals at a rural property northwest of Turtleford, Saskatchewan. When officers arrived, they discovered three men suffering from severe injuries. Despite immediate lifesaving efforts, all three were pronounced deceased at the scene.

Following an extensive investigation, RCMP confirmed that 25-year-old Madison Paddy-Jimmy, from Thunderchild First Nation, has been charged with second-degree murder in connection with Tonio’s passing. She was arrested later that day in Turtleford and has since appeared in North Battleford Provincial Court under Section 235(1) of the Criminal Code of Canada.

Authorities determined that all three victims sustained gunshot wounds, confirming the incident as a triple homicide. Several firearms were seized from the scene as part of the ongoing investigation.

The two other victims include a 46-year-old man from Turtleford, while the identity of the third male is still being confirmed by the Saskatchewan Coroners Service. Out of respect for privacy and the families affected, their names have not been publicly released. Next of kin have been notified, and Victim Services are providing support to those impacted by this tragedy.

“This has been a heartbreaking event that has touched multiple families and communities,” said an RCMP spokesperson. “Our investigators continue to work diligently to ensure that justice is served for the victims and their loved ones.”

The investigation is ongoing with support from the North Battleford and Saskatoon Forensic Identification Sections, the North Battleford General Investigation Section, the Turtleford Detachment, and the Saskatchewan Coroners Service.

Authorities have stated that there is no ongoing threat to public safety, and no additional suspects are being sought at this time.

As both Island Lake First Nation and Thunderchild First Nation grieve, communities across Saskatchewan are joining in solidarity, remembering Tonio Cantell and the others lost in this senseless act.

🕊️ Rest in peace, Tonio. Your light and spirit will continue to shine in the hearts of those who love you.
