Southeast Texas Mourns the Passing of Dr. David B. Smith, MD — Cherished Physician, Mentor, and Pillar of the Community Who Dedicated His Life to Women’s Healthcare and Compassionate Service
BEAUMONT, TEXAS – With deep sorrow and a sense of profound loss, the Southeast Texas medical community and countless families across the region mourn the passing of Dr. David B. Smith, MD, a beloved physician, visionary healthcare provider, and compassionate mentor whose career spanned decades and whose legacy will endure for generations.
Dr. Smith, a highly respected OB-GYN known for his dedication to women’s health, passed away peacefully in April 2025, surrounded by the love of his family. He was in his early 60s. His death marks the end of an era for many in Beaumont and the surrounding areas who came to know and trust him not just as a doctor, but as a lifelong partner in health and healing.
A Life Devoted to Healing
From the moment Dr. Smith began practicing medicine in Southeast Texas, he earned a reputation not only for his clinical excellence but also for the warmth and humanity he brought to every patient interaction. Over his career, he delivered thousands of babies, walked countless women through the most personal and complex moments of their lives, and served as a steady, reassuring presence during both joy and uncertainty.
“Dr. Smith was more than a doctor—he was a healer, a guide, and a friend to so many,” said longtime colleague Dr. Renee Turner, who trained under Smith early in her own medical career. “He had an unmatched ability to calm fears and build trust. He never rushed anyone, always took time to explain, and made you feel like you were the most important person in the world when you were in his care.”
A Mentor to Many, A Leader in His Field
In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Smith was a deeply committed mentor and educator. He taught generations of medical students and residents, often spending long hours at Baptist Hospitals of Southeast Texas and mentoring through the University of Texas Medical Branch clinical programs.
“Dr. Smith was the kind of doctor every student hopes to become,” said Dr. Jason Patel, a former resident now practicing in Houston. “He modeled compassion, diligence, and lifelong learning. He taught us not only how to practice medicine, but how to lead with heart.”
Throughout his career, Dr. Smith was recognized with numerous awards for excellence in patient care, community service, and medical education. But those close to him say he never sought recognition. He often shied away from the spotlight, preferring instead to focus on doing his work well, supporting his patients and staff, and spending time with his beloved family.
A Pillar of the Community
Beyond the hospital walls, Dr. Smith was a dedicated member of the Southeast Texas community. He volunteered for local health initiatives, supported youth programs, and participated in numerous church and civic efforts over the years. Colleagues recall his generosity, humility, and the way he quietly showed up for people in need—whether it was helping a patient cover medical costs, attending a school fundraiser, or mentoring a struggling student.
“He was someone who truly believed in serving others,” said family friend Linda Carver. “Whether it was in his role as a doctor, a neighbor, or a community member, David always showed up with kindness and compassion. He never asked for thanks—he just did what was right.”
Remembering Dr. Smith
Dr. David B. Smith is survived by his loving wife of over 35 years, Margaret Smith, his children Lauren, David Jr., and Emily, and several grandchildren. His family shared that while their hearts are broken by his passing, they are also filled with gratitude for the life he lived and the love he gave so generously.
“His family was his heart,” said daughter Lauren. “He gave so much to his patients, but we always knew we were his greatest joy. He loved fiercely and fully, and we will miss him every single day.”
Funeral services for Dr. Smith are scheduled for Saturday, April 12, 2025, at First United Methodist Church of Beaumont, with visitation beginning at 10 a.m. and services at 12 p.m. A private burial will follow. The family has invited the public to attend and share in remembering the man who touched so many lives.
In lieu of flowers, the Smith family requests donations be made in Dr. Smith’s memory to the Beaumont Women’s Health Foundation or to a local scholarship fund for future healthcare workers.
