Larned, Kansas Community Grieves the Sudden Passing of Rita Kurtz, Founding Partner of Hillside Envisions-Pawnee Co., Inc., Remembered for Her Lasting Contributions to Social Advocacy and Community Empowerment
LARNED, KANSAS — The Hillside Envisions–Pawnee Co., Inc. community and the greater Larned area are in mourning following the unexpected passing of one of their most treasured leaders, Rita Kurtz. A founding partner and driving force behind the organization’s mission and growth, Kurtz’s death has left a profound void in the hearts of those who knew her, worked with her, and benefited from her tireless advocacy and compassion.
Kurtz, whose work helped shape Hillside Envisions into a cornerstone of community development and service in Pawnee County, passed away unexpectedly, according to a public statement released by the organization. While the cause of her death has not been publicly disclosed, the overwhelming outpouring of tributes reflects the far-reaching impact of her life’s work.
A Visionary Leader
From the earliest days of Hillside Envisions, Rita Kurtz was at the heart of its mission: to empower individuals, uplift communities, and foster inclusive opportunities across Pawnee County. Her leadership extended beyond board meetings and project planning—Rita was a mentor, motivator, and role model who always placed the needs of others before her own.
“Rita was more than a founding partner—she was the soul of our organization,” a statement from Hillside Envisions read. “Her passion for building a better future for our community was contagious, and she inspired everyone around her to believe in what was possible.”
Kurtz’s dedication to the community wasn’t limited to her role with Hillside. She served on multiple boards and was an outspoken advocate for social programs, mental health awareness, and resources for families in need. Her colleagues recall her as someone who led by example, often putting in countless hours of unpaid work to ensure programs were running, grants were written, and voices were heard.
Remembering Her Spirit
Friends and co-workers describe Rita as warm, approachable, and unfailingly kind. Her laughter filled rooms, and her presence brought comfort to those navigating hard times. She was known to show up unannounced with meals for families in crisis or to personally drive residents to appointments if transportation was unavailable.
“Rita made people feel seen,” said longtime friend and fellow board member Janice Holloway. “Whether you were a client, a colleague, or someone she just met, she gave you her full attention and compassion.”
The suddenness of her passing has been particularly difficult for those closest to her. Colleagues say they were planning upcoming community events and initiatives with her just days before her death.
A Legacy That Lives On
In the wake of this heartbreaking loss, the Hillside Envisions board has pledged to carry on Kurtz’s vision and values. A memorial scholarship fund in her name is being established to support young leaders in the Larned area who demonstrate a commitment to community service—one of Rita’s most cherished causes.
Plans are also underway to dedicate a community garden and gathering space in her honor, something she had advocated for during her final months. “It will be a place of peace and purpose—just like Rita would have wanted,” Holloway added.
A Final Farewell
Funeral services are expected to be announced in the coming days, and a public celebration of life is being organized by Hillside Envisions and members of the Larned community. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made to Hillside Envisions–Pawnee Co., Inc. to continue the work Rita championed so passionately.
As the community begins to grieve and reflect, one sentiment rings out clearly among those who knew her: Rita Kurtz was the kind of person who didn’t just dream of a better world—she helped build it, one act of kindness at a time.
