LOUISVILLE, KY – April 8, 2025 — A wave of grief and fear has swept through the Portland neighborhood of Louisville after three people were found shot to death inside a home early Tuesday morning. The Louisville Metro Police Department (LMPD) has launched a full-scale investigation into what is now being treated as a triple homicide, marking one of the city’s deadliest incidents so far this year.

Grim Discovery in the Portland Neighborhood

The tragedy unfolded around 4:50 a.m. when LMPD officers were dispatched to a residence in the 2200 block of Griffiths Avenue, near North 22nd Street, after receiving a call about gunshots heard in the area. When officers arrived at the scene, they found a deeply disturbing sight: two men and one woman, all dead from apparent gunshot wounds inside the home.

Emergency medical crews pronounced all three victims dead on the scene. Police have not yet released the identities of the deceased, pending notification of next of kin.

Neighborhood in Shock

The Portland neighborhood, already familiar with crime, is now grappling with the weight of a brutal act of violence that has rattled even the most hardened residents. Neighbors described being awakened by the sound of gunfire and later watching in horror as police cordoned off the area.

“It’s tragic. That could’ve been anybody,” said one longtime neighbor who declined to be named. “We all try to live our lives, but something like this just makes you feel exposed. You’ve got to keep your head on a swivel every day now.”

Others gathered in small groups outside their homes, watching investigators work late into the morning, visibly shaken and frustrated by the city’s ongoing struggles with violent crime.

Mayor and Police Respond

Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg addressed the public during a press conference later in the day, calling the triple homicide a devastating blow to a city that, up until now, had seen a notable drop in homicides in 2025.

“We’ve made progress,” Greenberg said. “Homicides are down over 40% so far this year. But one act like this—a triple homicide—reminds us all that we have so much more work to do to make every neighborhood safe.”

The LMPD is urging anyone with information about the incident to come forward. Homicide detectives have not yet named any suspects, and no arrests have been made as of Tuesday evening.

“We know someone knows something,” said LMPD spokesperson Dwight Mitchell. “If you heard anything, saw anything—please reach out. These victims deserve justice.”

Part of a Disturbing Trend

This latest triple homicide is the third of its kind in the Louisville area in less than two months. On February 17, three teenagers were killed in a shooting in Shively. Just days later, on February 21, another triple shooting outside a driver’s license office in Valley Station left three more people dead.

Public safety advocates say these repeated mass shootings highlight the urgent need for violence prevention initiatives, greater police-community cooperation, and stronger gun control measures.

“This is becoming a horrifying pattern,” said local activist Renee Douglas, who leads a neighborhood watch group. “People are scared, and the violence is hitting closer and closer to home. We need a citywide commitment to stopping this.”

Next Steps in the Investigation

Investigators spent most of Tuesday combing through the scene on Griffiths Avenue, collecting evidence, interviewing neighbors, and reviewing nearby surveillance footage. Authorities have not yet indicated whether the victims knew each other or if this was a targeted attack.

The police have also not confirmed whether the shooter—or shooters—were among the deceased or are still at large. Until more information is revealed, residents remain on edge, waiting for answers and fearing the worst.
