Authorities Identify Victims in Deadly Hebron Street Shooting in Springfield as 29-Year-Old Darrell Simmons and 32-Year-Old Luis Medina, Investigation Into April 2 Double Homicide Remains Ongoing
SPRINGFIELD, MA — April 15, 2025 — The Hampden County District Attorney’s Office has officially released the names of the two men who tragically lost their lives in a double shooting that occurred on Hebron Street in Springfield earlier this month. The announcement comes as investigators continue working to determine the circumstances surrounding the deadly incident.
According to Payton North, Communications Director for the District Attorney’s Office, Springfield Police officers responded to reports of gunfire at a residence located in the 0–100 block of Hebron Street around 5:40 a.m. on Tuesday, April 2.
When officers arrived at the scene, they discovered two adult males suffering from gunshot wounds inside the residence. Emergency medical personnel were immediately called to the location, but despite life-saving efforts, both victims were pronounced dead at the scene.
Victims Identified
On Monday, April 15, officials confirmed the identities of the victims as:
- Darrell Simmons, 29, of Springfield
- Luis Medina, 32, also of Springfield
Both men were known residents of the area, and their sudden deaths have shaken the Hebron Street neighborhood and the greater Springfield community. Family members and friends gathered at the scene in the days following the incident, leaving candles and messages in remembrance of the two lives lost too soon.
“This has been an incredibly difficult time for both families,” said a relative of one of the victims. “We just want answers and justice.”
Investigation Ongoing
The Springfield Police Department’s Homicide Unit, in coordination with the Hampden County District Attorney’s Office, is leading the investigation. Authorities have not yet announced any arrests or named any suspects publicly, and the motive behind the shooting remains unclear.
Officials say they are reviewing evidence from the scene, including surveillance footage from nearby homes and businesses, and are conducting interviews with potential witnesses. Police have urged anyone with knowledge of the shooting — no matter how minor the detail — to come forward.
“This investigation is active and ongoing,” stated the District Attorney’s Office in a press release. “We are working diligently to piece together what led to this tragic loss of life and hold accountable those responsible.”
Community Reaction
The violent nature of the incident, and the early morning hour at which it occurred, has left many residents feeling on edge. Community leaders and local organizations have called for increased safety measures and better support for youth and families in high-risk areas of the city.
“There’s far too much gun violence in our city,” said one local activist. “We need more community engagement and outreach before another family is forced to bury a loved one.”
City officials have expressed their condolences and pledged to continue working alongside law enforcement to combat gun violence and support crime prevention initiatives.
