FSU Shooting Victim Robert Morales Identified as Son of Controversial Cold War-Era CIA Operative Ricardo “Monkey” Morales

TALLAHASSEE, FL (April 18, 2025) – The tragic events at Florida State University (FSU) on Thursday have left the campus community in shock. Among the victims of the shooting, one has been identified as Robert Morales, a dedicated employee at FSU’s dining services, who was fatally shot in the incident that claimed two lives and left six others injured.

Robert, who had worked at FSU since 2015, was remembered as a caring and committed individual who left a lasting impact on everyone he met. He was the son of Ricardo “Monkey” Morales, a controversial figure from the Cold War era known for his role as a CIA operative. Ricardo Morales was a Cuban exile who became embroiled in anti-Castro operations, including training Cuban exiles in sniper tactics as part of covert operations. His activities with the CIA, FBI, and other agencies have made him a figure surrounded by intrigue and controversy.

Though Robert Morales lived and worked in Tallahassee, he hailed from Miami-Dade County. His family has expressed devastation over his untimely death, with his wife and daughter left to mourn. Friends and colleagues remember Robert for his kindness, strong work ethic, and the quiet strength he exhibited in all his endeavors. The FSU community has rallied together, offering condolences and support to his family during this tragic time.

The shooting occurred at around 11:50 AM on April 17, 2025, when a gunman opened fire near the university’s Student Union Building, leading to the deaths of Robert Morales and another man, Tiru Chabba, a regional vice president with Aramark. At least six others were injured, and authorities have launched an investigation into the motive behind the attack.

The suspected shooter, identified as Phoenix Ikner, a 20-year-old FSU student, was taken into custody shortly after the incident. Ikner is the stepson of Jessica Ikner, a longtime deputy with the Leon County Sheriff’s Office. The motive behind the shooting remains unclear, and the investigation is ongoing.

The tragic death of Robert Morales has not only left a void in his family but has also deeply impacted the community at FSU. Many are reflecting on the complexity of his family history and how it intersects with his own life. As his loved ones grieve, they are also advocating for awareness of the impact of mental health struggles and violence, with hopes that such tragedies can be prevented in the future.

As the investigation continues, the focus remains on remembering Robert’s life, honoring his contributions, and offering support to those who have lost so much. The community at FSU is left to cope with the aftermath of a senseless act of violence that took the life of one of its own.
