Devastating Tragedy Strikes as Off-Duty Paramedic Lieutenant Paul Mickolick Dies Helping Stranded Driver; Community Grieves His Selfless Sacrifice
Wayne County, OH — April 19, 2025 — The Wayne County community is in mourning following the untimely death of Lieutenant Paul Mickolick, a dedicated flight paramedic, and fire lieutenant, who tragically lost his life while assisting a stranded driver. The incident occurred late Friday evening, April 18, 2025, on Stratton Road near West Salem, Ohio.
A Hero’s Final Act
Around 10:39 p.m., Lieutenant Mickolick, who was off-duty at the time, noticed a stranded truck in a ditch and decided to pull over to offer assistance. The truck, a Ford F-150, had been stuck in the roadside ditch, and Mickolick, a trained first responder with Cleveland Clinic’s flight paramedic team, knew all too well the importance of helping others in their time of need. As Mickolick and the truck’s driver, Tylor James Green, 33, stood near the vehicle, disaster struck.
In a tragic turn of events, a 2006 Cadillac CTS, driven by Creighton L. Trimble, 64, lost control and veered off the road, plowing into both Mickolick and Green. The force of the crash was devastating. Mickolick was immediately critically injured, and Green was also struck but managed to survive. Emergency services arrived at the scene and transported both victims to Cleveland Clinic Lodi Hospital. Mickolick was pronounced dead instantly. Green, who sustained serious injuries, was later flown to Cleveland Clinic Akron General for further treatment. The condition of the driver of the Cadillac, Creighton Trimble, remains unknown as the investigation is ongoing.
