Violence Strikes in Broad Daylight: San Antonio Pedestrian Shot in the Cheek While Walking on Sidewalk Near Gas Station; Suspect at Large and Motive Unclear
April 19, 2025
San Antonio police are investigating a disturbing and violent incident that unfolded in broad daylight on the city’s north side, where a man was shot in the face while simply walking down a sidewalk. The sudden and seemingly unprovoked attack has left the community rattled and law enforcement authorities working urgently to piece together what happened.
According to a statement from the San Antonio Police Department (SAPD), the incident occurred earlier Saturday afternoon in a neighborhood near the intersection of Blanco Road and West Silver Sands Drive, a typically quiet area known for residential traffic and small businesses.
Shocking Act of Violence
Authorities say the victim, a man in his late 20s to early 30s, was walking alone on the sidewalk when someone opened fire—striking him directly in the face. Witnesses nearby reported hearing a loud gunshot, followed by screams.
“I was just walking my dog when I heard a pop,” said Maria Gonzalez, a nearby resident. “Then I saw the man drop to the ground. He was covered in blood. It was terrifying.”
First responders arrived on the scene within minutes. The victim was found conscious but seriously injured, and was quickly transported to a local hospital in critical condition. Medical personnel later confirmed the bullet struck him near the cheek and exited near the jawline, causing significant facial trauma but miraculously missing vital arteries and the brain.
Search for Suspect Underway
SAPD says they are actively reviewing surveillance footage from surrounding homes and businesses, hoping to identify the shooter. At this time, no arrests have been made, and investigators are working to determine whether the shooting was targeted or random.
“We’re treating this as a very serious and deliberate act of violence,” said Sgt. Richard Montoya with SAPD. “Right now, we’re asking for the public’s help. If you saw anything or have any video, please come forward.”
Residents Alarmed and Fearful
The incident has shaken many residents in the area, who say they don’t typically witness this level of violence in their neighborhood.
“It’s really unsettling,” said Jason Nguyen, who owns a nearby convenience store. “You think walking on the sidewalk should be the safest thing in the world. Now people are afraid to step outside.”
SAPD has increased patrols in the area as a precaution and to reassure the community. While police have not released a suspect description at this time, they believe the shooter may have fled in a dark-colored vehicle spotted speeding from the area around the time of the incident.
Ongoing Investigation
As detectives continue their work, they are urging anyone who may have witnessed the shooting or noticed suspicious activity in the area to contact SAPD’s non-emergency line at (210) 207-7273 or submit anonymous tips through Crime Stoppers at (210) 224-STOP (7867).
Victim Fighting for Recovery
The victim remains hospitalized and is expected to undergo reconstructive surgery in the coming days. His name has not yet been released as family members are being notified and protective protocols are followed.
Doctors say while he is stable, his recovery will likely be long and difficult, both physically and emotionally.
“This man will carry the scars of this senseless violence for life,” one physician said. “But he’s alive, and that’s something we’re very thankful for.”
Community Reacts
Several local advocacy groups, including San Antonio Against Violence, have called for increased community vigilance and support for the victim.
“This shooting is yet another painful reminder that gun violence can touch anyone, anywhere,” said Erica Duran, director of the group. “We need accountability, but we also need healing. Our thoughts are with this young man and his loved ones.”
As San Antonio reels from another act of gun violence, one thing is clear: this community is ready to stand together, demand justice, and help ensure that no one else is senselessly hurt while simply walking down a sidewalk.
