Cleveland Father Identified in High-Speed Chase with Toddler in the Car: Elijah Martinez Faces Felony Charges

BROOK PARK, OH – A 22-year-old Cleveland man, identified as Elijah Martinez, is facing serious criminal charges after leading Brook Park police on a dangerous high-speed chase — all while his 2-year-old child was unrestrained in the vehicle. The incident, which occurred earlier this week, has stirred outrage and alarm throughout the community, raising urgent questions about child safety, parental responsibility, and police pursuit protocols.

According to Brook Park police and Cleveland 19 News, the situation began when officers attempted a routine traffic stop. Martinez, behind the wheel of a vehicle later determined to be operating without a valid license, refused to pull over. Instead, he accelerated at high speed, initiating a chase that rapidly escalated into a full-scale public safety threat.

As officers pursued Martinez through Brook Park and neighboring areas, they were shocked to learn a 2-year-old child — Martinez’s own son — was in the back seat of the car. Even more concerning, police say the child was not secured in a car seat or any type of restraint, exposing the toddler to life-threatening danger throughout the chase.

“The level of recklessness involved here is appalling,” said Brook Park Police Chief Mike Petkac. “Our officers were placed in an incredibly difficult situation — to stop a dangerous suspect while knowing an innocent child’s life was literally in the back seat. It’s a situation we never want to see.”

After a tense pursuit, officers successfully stopped the vehicle without injury. Bodycam footage shows law enforcement quickly approaching the car and safely removing the child. Emergency medical services evaluated the toddler at the scene and confirmed that, despite the terrifying ordeal, the child was physically unharmed.

The child has since been placed in the custody of child protective services while authorities notify other family members. The child’s name has not been released due to privacy concerns.

Elijah Martinez was immediately arrested and is currently being held at the Cuyahoga County Jail. He is facing multiple felony charges, including:

  • Fleeing and eluding law enforcement
  • Child endangering
  • Driving under suspension
  • Reckless operation
  • Failure to comply with police

Prosecutors have indicated that additional charges may be presented to a grand jury as the investigation continues. Martinez is scheduled to appear in court for a bond hearing later this week.

Community members have expressed outrage at the incident, particularly at the apparent disregard for the child’s safety.

“This could have ended in absolute tragedy,” said Brook Park resident Teresa Gallo. “That little boy is lucky to be alive. It’s heartbreaking that he was put in that situation by someone who’s supposed to protect him.”

Advocates are now calling for stronger public education around car seat safety and child protection laws, while law enforcement officials are reviewing protocols to determine how to best handle high-risk chases involving minors.

“This incident underscores the importance of protecting our children at all costs,” Chief Petkac added. “No matter the circumstances, nothing justifies putting a child in harm’s way.”

As the investigation continues, Brook Park police are asking anyone who witnessed the incident or may have additional information to come forward.
