Tragedy in Chatham: Rylee Britton Among Four Young Lives Lost in Devastating Crash at YNOT After School Camp

Chatham, IL – April 29, 2025 — A wave of heartbreak has swept through the small, close-knit town of Chatham, Illinois, following a catastrophic vehicle crash that claimed the lives of four children and teens and left others injured. Among the victims was Rylee Britton, whose sudden passing at just 13 years old has left family, friends, and the community reeling with grief.

The tragic incident unfolded on the afternoon of Monday, April 28, around 3:20 p.m., when a vehicle veered off the road and plowed into the YNOT After School Camp facility, operated by YNOT Outdoors, a local nonprofit known for its commitment to enriching the lives of young people. The camp, which was full of activity and laughter just moments before the crash, turned into a scene of chaos and sorrow as first responders rushed to assist the injured and locate victims.

Authorities with the Illinois State Police confirmed that the four victims ranged in age from 4 to 18 years old, though not all names have been publicly released. Among those confirmed was Rylee Britton, a vibrant and kind-hearted eighth-grader who had dreams of one day becoming a veterinarian. She was known for her infectious smile, love for animals, and dedication to her friends and school.

Witnesses described the horror as the vehicle — reportedly traveling at a high speed — careened off the road, mounted the curb, and slammed into the building without warning. Some children were inside participating in indoor activities, while others were near the front doors when the vehicle made impact.

Paramedics and firefighters arrived within minutes and worked tirelessly to rescue those trapped and provide immediate care. Several children and adults were transported to area hospitals with injuries ranging from moderate to critical. The full scope of injuries has not yet been released.

Chatham Mayor Douglas Spencer held a press conference late Monday evening, visibly emotional, stating, “This is a day no town ever wants to face. We are mourning the loss of our children. These were innocent lives, full of potential, and taken far too soon.”

A growing memorial of flowers, teddy bears, candles, and handwritten notes now surrounds the crash site. Vigils have been planned across town, including one outside Glenwood Middle School, where Rylee was a student. Grief counselors have been deployed to area schools and community centers to support both children and adults in the wake of the tragedy.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation. Authorities are examining surveillance footage and have not yet released details regarding the driver’s identity or whether drugs, alcohol, or a medical emergency may have been contributing factors.

In a heartfelt statement, the Britton family expressed their sorrow and gratitude for the outpouring of support:

“Rylee brought joy and warmth to every room she entered. She loved fiercely, laughed loudly, and dreamed big. We are shattered by her loss but thankful for the love this community has shown.”

YNOT Outdoors has temporarily suspended operations as staff, volunteers, and families grieve. The organization posted a message on its website, reading, “We are heartbroken beyond words. These children were our world. We will honor their lives by continuing to serve the youth of this community — stronger than ever, in their memory.”

As Chatham begins to heal from one of the darkest days in its history, the names and faces of the young lives lost — including Rylee Britton — will never be forgotten. They were cherished, loved, and will remain forever in the hearts of those who knew them.

Funeral arrangements for Rylee Britton will be announced by the family in the coming days. A town-wide day of mourning has been proposed in honor of all the victims.
