Devastation in Kentucky: Two Children Tragically Killed in Early Easter Morning Crash in Russell County, Community Mourns Loss of 14-Year-Old Skyler Huckaby and 12-Year-Old David King Jr.

Russell County, KY — A devastating Easter morning crash in the quiet Sano community of Russell County has now claimed the lives of two young children, leaving families shattered and a community in mourning.

Authorities confirmed that 12-year-old David King Jr. succumbed to his injuries early Monday morning, April 28, 2025, at the University of Kentucky Hospital in Lexington. His death follows that of 14-year-old Skyler Huckaby, who was pronounced dead shortly after the accident at Russell County Hospital in the early hours of Easter Sunday.

The crash occurred at approximately 1:15 a.m. on Sunday, April 20, on Sano Mount Olive Road — a rural stretch often used by locals. According to a statement from the Kentucky State Police (KSP), the vehicle involved was a 2009 Chevrolet HHR driven by 31-year-old David King, of Columbia, Kentucky. Investigators say King was traveling east when his vehicle veered off the right side of the road and slammed into a tree.

Three juveniles were in the car with him, including David King Jr. and the Huckaby siblings. Tragically, both King Jr. and Skyler Huckaby sustained fatal injuries. A third juvenile — Skyler’s younger brother — was also hurt but is recovering from non-life-threatening injuries, authorities said.

Driver Arrested and Facing Multiple Charges

Following a preliminary investigation and on-scene sobriety assessments, David King was arrested and is now facing a multitude of serious charges, including:

  • Vehicular Homicide Under the Influence of Alcohol
  • DUI, 3rd Offense
  • Assault, 1st Degree (2 counts)
  • Wanton Endangerment, 1st Degree (3 counts)
  • Failure to Wear Seat Belts
  • Reckless Driving

He is currently being held in the Russell County Detention Center as the legal process unfolds.

KSP Troopers noted that none of the children were properly restrained at the time of the crash. Alcohol is believed to be a contributing factor in the incident.

Community in Mourning

News of the tragedy has sent shockwaves throughout Russell County and neighboring communities. Friends, classmates, and teachers of the two children have expressed deep grief and heartbreak. Both boys were known for their bright personalities, sense of humor, and love for family.

“They were both so full of life,” said one teacher at their local school. “To lose them this way is unimaginable.”

Support Efforts and Upcoming Benefit

In response to the tragedy, friends and community members have organized a benefit event to help support the families of both victims. The fundraiser will take place on Saturday, May 3, with all proceeds going toward funeral costs and ongoing support for the affected families.

Organizers say the event will include food, a silent auction, live music, and a candlelight vigil to honor David King Jr. and Skyler Huckaby. More details are expected to be released in the coming days.

Seeking Justice and Healing

As the community gathers to mourn, the legal process against David King is moving forward. Officials are urging the public to avoid speculation and let the justice system run its course. The crash remains under active investigation by the Kentucky State Police’s accident reconstruction unit.

Anyone with additional information about the incident is encouraged to contact KSP Post 15.

This Easter weekend, meant to be a time of renewal and celebration, has instead become a time of deep sorrow in Russell County. Two young lives full of promise have been lost, and a community is left trying to piece together how to move forward in the face of such overwhelming grief.
