The incident occurred on Saturday, April 27, on Grand Canyon Drive, and has since left family members, neighbors, and first responders shaken with grief.
According to a news release from the Bolingbrook Police Department, officers were dispatched to the residential area at approximately 1:53 p.m. after receiving a 911 call reporting that a toddler had been struck by a vehicle backing out of a driveway.
When officers arrived on the scene, they immediately began providing life-saving measures to the young child until paramedics from the Bolingbrook Fire Department arrived to take over care. An Unimaginable Loss
The loss of a child under such devastating circumstances has sent shockwaves through the close-knit suburban neighborhood, where residents are grappling with the pain and fragility of life.
“It’s the kind of tragedy that just breaks your heart,” said a nearby resident, who asked to remain anonymous. “Everyone on this street is a parent or grandparent. We’re just devastated.”
Although details about the driver have not been publicly released, initial police statements suggest the incident was a tragic accident. There have been no announcements of charges as of yet, and police have stated that the investigation is ongoing.
Police and Community Response
The Bolingbrook Police Department has extended its condolences to the family and is encouraging residents to take extra caution when driving in residential areas, particularly where young children are present.
“This is a tragedy no family should ever have to experience,” said Chief Mike Rompa of the Bolingbrook Police. “Our officers and first responders did everything they could, and our hearts are with the grieving family during this incredibly difficult time.”
Crisis support services are being made available to the officers who responded to the scene, as well as to the child’s family and surrounding community. Grief counselors are expected to be present in the neighborhood in the coming days to help support those impacted.
Reminders About Driveway Safety
Incidents involving young children and vehicles backing up occur more often than many realize. According to Safe Kids Worldwide, at least 50 children are backed over by vehicles every week in the U.S., and such incidents are often preventable with increased visibility, technology (like backup cameras), and driver vigilance.
Experts recommend always walking around your vehicle before backing up, especially in residential neighborhoods, and keeping young children close and in sight during outdoor play.
A Community in Mourning
In Bolingbrook, the loss of the 2-year-old has prompted a swell of support from neighbors, local organizations, and nearby churches. Several community members have expressed interest in holding a candlelight vigil or fundraiser to support the grieving family with funeral expenses.
“Even if you didn’t know the child, the pain is felt everywhere,” said Marla Jensen, a volunteer at a local parenting center. “There’s a collective ache, and we’re all just trying to figure out how we can help.”
Next Steps
Authorities are continuing their investigation into the circumstances of the accident and have asked any witnesses to come forward with additional information. At this time, foul play is not suspected.
As the Bolingbrook community comes together to mourn the young life lost too soon, many are reflecting on the importance of caution, empathy, and support in the face of overwhelming tragedy.
