Man Fatally Shot on Dixieanne Avenue in Old North Sacramento; Police Launch Homicide Investigation Into City’s 13th Killing of the Year

SACRAMENTO, CA — April 30, 2025 — A quiet Wednesday morning in Old North Sacramento was shattered by violence after a man was fatally shot in what has become the city’s 13th homicide of the year, according to the Sacramento Police Department.

At approximately 8:18 a.m., officers responded to multiple 911 calls reporting a person lying on the ground on the 700 block of Dixieanne Avenue. Upon arrival, officers discovered a man suffering from at least one gunshot wound. Despite efforts by emergency responders, the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Ongoing Homicide Investigation

The identity of the victim has not yet been publicly released, pending notification of next of kin. Sacramento homicide detectives were quickly dispatched to the scene and have launched a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

Police said the area around the incident was cordoned off early in the morning as forensic units worked to collect evidence, speak with potential witnesses, and review any surveillance footage from surrounding businesses or homes.

Authorities have not yet announced any suspects or arrests, and they are asking for the public’s help. Anyone with information related to the incident is urged to contact the Sacramento Police Department’s tip line or Crime Stoppers.

A Neighborhood Shaken

The shooting has left residents of the Old North Sacramento neighborhood on edge. Several neighbors reported hearing loud noises around the time of the incident but were unsure what had happened until officers flooded the area.

“It’s really sad and scary,” said Maria Torres, who lives a block away. “This used to be such a quiet place in the mornings. Now, we’re scared to let our kids walk to school.”

Another resident, who declined to give their name, expressed frustration about what they called a “growing sense of lawlessness” in the area. “We need more police presence, more community programs — something has to change,” they said.

The City’s 13th Homicide of 2025

According to publicly available police data, this marks the 13th homicide within Sacramento city limits this year, reflecting what appears to be an unsettling trend in gun-related violence across the region.

Law enforcement officials and city leaders have recently acknowledged the challenge of curbing violent crime, especially in historically underserved communities. Sacramento Police Chief Kathy Lester has previously committed to increasing patrols in high-crime areas and investing in violence prevention initiatives.

City officials have not yet commented on this specific incident but are expected to address the rising homicide numbers in an upcoming public safety briefing scheduled later this week.

Call for Witnesses and Tips

Sacramento police are urging anyone who may have seen or heard anything suspicious around Dixieanne Avenue during the time of the shooting to come forward. Even small details, police say, could be crucial in solving the case.
