Gunfire Erupts in Downtown Jersey City: One Injured, Vehicle Riddled with Bullets as Police Launch Early Morning Investigation
JERSEY CITY, N.J. — Police are investigating a shooting that left one person injured and resulted in property damage early Sunday morning, prompting concerns about violence in the heart of the city.
According to law enforcement officials, the investigation began shortly after staff at Jersey City Medical Center contacted police to report that a gunshot victim had arrived at their emergency department around 3:45 a.m. The victim, whose identity has not been released, told officers they were shot while inside a vehicle near the intersection of Newark Avenue and Jersey Avenue — a busy area known for nightlife and local businesses.
Responding officers immediately went to the hospital and discovered the victim’s vehicle parked outside. The car showed clear signs of violence, with multiple bullet holes visible across the exterior. This evidence prompted police to secure the area around the hospital as they expanded their investigation.
Officers then canvassed the area of Newark and Jersey Avenues, searching for shell casings, surveillance footage, and any witnesses who may have seen or heard the incident unfold. At the time of the shooting, several residents in the neighborhood reported hearing gunfire, though none appeared to have seen the shooter.
By 5:30 a.m., authorities confirmed that no other injuries had been reported. The victim, who sustained non-life-threatening injuries, is receiving treatment and is expected to recover.
Detectives from the Jersey City Police Department’s Shooting Response Team are leading the ongoing investigation. While a motive has not yet been established, investigators are exploring all possibilities, including whether the victim was targeted or if the shooting was a random act of violence.
No arrests have been made as of Sunday morning, and police are asking for the public’s help. Anyone with information about the shooting is urged to contact the Jersey City Police Department’s tip line. Tips can be submitted anonymously.
The incident comes amid broader concerns about gun violence in urban areas across New Jersey. Community leaders and officials continue to call for stronger measures to curb illegal firearms and improve public safety.
More updates are expected as the investigation develops.
