Dylan Cochran Obituary – Louisville, KY: Mill Creek Elementary Mourns the Sudden Loss of Beloved JCPS Physical Education Teacher

Louisville, KY – The Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS) community is mourning the heartbreaking and unexpected passing of Dylan Robert Cochran, a deeply respected and beloved physical education teacher at Mill Creek Elementary School. Dylan died on May 1, 2025, at the age of 29, leaving behind a legacy of passion, dedication, and compassion that touched the lives of countless students, educators, and families.

Born on September 21, 1995, in Louisville, Kentucky, Dylan was the cherished son of Bruce and Missy Cochran (née Blanford). A proud graduate of the University of Louisville, Dylan was driven by a calling to teach and mentor young people. His dream was realized through his work with JCPS, where he became a vibrant and inspiring figure at Mill Creek Elementary.

Dylan brought unmatched enthusiasm to his role as a physical education teacher. Known for his upbeat spirit, kind heart, and natural ability to connect with students, he was a teacher who made everyone feel seen and encouraged. He championed the importance of health and movement, but more importantly, he modeled resilience, empathy, and joy in learning.

His colleagues describe him as the “heart of the gym” — a mentor who showed up every day not just to teach, but to uplift. Students adored Mr. Cochran, not only for his engaging lessons and fun approach to physical fitness but also for his support, patience, and unwavering belief in their potential.

News of his sudden passing has sent shockwaves through the school and broader Louisville community. Grief counselors have been made available for students and staff, and a memorial space has been set up in the school’s main hallway for messages, drawings, and memories of Mr. Cochran.

In a statement, Mill Creek’s principal shared:

“Mr. Cochran was more than a teacher to our school — he was family. His passion, kindness, and presence shaped a generation of students, and our school will never be the same without him.”

Outside of the classroom, Dylan was known for his love of sports, music, and time spent with family and close friends. He brought warmth to every room he entered and had a gift for making others feel included and appreciated. He lived his life with humility and purpose.

He is survived by his loving parents, Bruce and Missy Cochran, and extended family members who are mourning his loss with profound sorrow. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Owen Funeral Home, with services to be announced to the public in the coming days.

In honor of Dylan’s life, JCPS is exploring the establishment of a memorial scholarship or initiative to support future educators with the same passion and heart he brought to his work.

The Cochran family and the JCPS community ask for privacy during this incredibly difficult time. They also encourage anyone struggling with mental health to seek help, reminding everyone that they are never alone.
