Tragedy on Atlanta Highway: Daquan Wilson Identified as Victim in Montgomery’s Early Morning Fatal Shooting

MONTGOMERY, AL — A homicide investigation is underway in Alabama’s capital city after a man was found fatally shot early Thursday morning along one of Montgomery’s busiest thoroughfares.

According to the Montgomery Police Department, officers and fire medics responded to the 5700 block of Atlanta Highway around 5:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 8, following a report of a shooting. When they arrived at the scene, they discovered an adult male suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.

Emergency responders attempted to render aid, but the victim was ultimately pronounced dead on the scene, Montgomery Police Lt. David Wise confirmed. The victim has since been identified as Daquan Wilson.

Few details have been released so far, and investigators are remaining tight-lipped as they work to piece together the events that led to the deadly shooting. No information regarding a suspect, motive, or potential witnesses has been made public. The crime scene, located near a commercial stretch of the highway, was cordoned off for several hours as police collected evidence and interviewed individuals in the area.

The section of Atlanta Highway where the incident occurred is lined with various businesses and fast-food establishments and is frequently traveled by early morning commuters, raising concerns among local residents about the increasing levels of gun violence in the community.

“This is a well-traveled area. It’s really alarming to hear that something like this could happen so early in the morning, when people are just heading to work,” said Jasmine Taylor, a nearby resident who often passes through the area during her daily commute.

The death of Daquan Wilson marks yet another life lost to gun violence in Montgomery, a city that has seen fluctuating crime rates in recent years. City officials and community leaders have frequently called for increased public cooperation and stronger neighborhood safety initiatives to curb the trend.

As of Thursday afternoon, Montgomery Police had not made any arrests, and they are now appealing to the public for help. Investigators are urging anyone who may have seen or heard anything suspicious in the area during the early morning hours to come forward.

“Even the smallest detail can help us piece together what happened and bring justice to Mr. Wilson and his loved ones,” Lt. Wise said in a press statement. “We need the public’s eyes and ears to help us solve this case.”

Those with information are encouraged to contact Montgomery Police at 334-625-2831. Tips can also be submitted anonymously through Central Alabama Crime Stoppers at 334-215-STOP or the Secret Witness line at 334-625-4000.

As the investigation continues, the Montgomery community mourns another tragic loss, and police remain committed to pursuing all leads in their efforts to bring the perpetrator to justice.
