Florence Woman Killed in Fiery I-26 Crash Identified as Mariah Ramos, 29
CALHOUN COUNTY, S.C. — May 14, 2025
A devastating early morning crash on Interstate 26 has claimed the life of 29-year-old Mariah Ramos, a Florence resident originally from San Juan, Puerto Rico. The fatal accident unfolded around 3:05 a.m. Wednesday in the eastbound lanes near mile marker 122 in Calhoun County, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
Officials say Ramos was driving a 2020 Toyota sedan when it collided with the rear of a 1983 Mack truck, also traveling east. The impact was severe, and Ramos — who was alone in the car — was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Mack truck was not injured.
Troopers have not yet released details on what caused the crash, and it remains unknown whether either driver was wearing a seatbelt at the time. Master Trooper William Bennett confirmed that the incident is still under investigation.
The Calhoun County Coroner’s Office identified Ramos later that morning.
This marks the first traffic fatality in Calhoun County in 2025, but it adds to a growing toll on South Carolina roads. The state has already seen 278 roadway deaths this year, following 948 traffic-related fatalities in 2024.
Friends and family are remembering Ramos as a radiant, compassionate woman who bridged her Puerto Rican roots and South Carolina community with grace and warmth. Known for her bright smile and kind heart, she touched many lives and leaves behind a legacy of love and resilience.
As the investigation continues, authorities urge anyone with information or who may have witnessed the crash to contact the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
Our heartfelt condolences go out to the loved ones of Mariah Ramos during this time of immense grief.
