Oildale, CA — A quiet neighborhood in Oildale was rocked earlier this week by a horrific murder-suicide that claimed the lives of two young adults from Bakersfield. The Kern County Coroner’s Office has officially identified the victims as 31-year-old Jasmine Hernandez Ascencio and 25-year-old Joshua Anthony Reveles.

The deadly incident unfolded on the morning of Tuesday, May 27, in the 100 block of Lincoln Avenue, prompting a swift response from the Kern County Sheriff’s Office (KCSO) after a 911 call reported possible gunfire inside a residence. Deputies arrived at the scene shortly after 9:00 a.m., where they discovered two individuals deceased from apparent gunshot wounds.

According to preliminary findings released by the coroner’s office, Jasmine Hernandez Ascencio died as a result of multiple gunshot wounds and has been identified as the victim of a homicide. Joshua Anthony Reveles, who also suffered a fatal gunshot wound, is believed to have died by suicide, marking the case as a murder-suicide pending further investigation.

Community in Shock

Neighbors and nearby residents described the situation as both shocking and heartbreaking. Several individuals reported hearing raised voices and what sounded like an argument shortly before the sound of gunfire.

“It’s just tragic,” said one neighbor who asked not to be named. “They were so young. No one expects something like this to happen right next door.”

Friends and family of the victims have since taken to social media to express their grief, sharing photos and memories of Jasmine and Joshua. Many described Jasmine as a loving, hard-working woman who cared deeply for her family, while others said Joshua had been struggling emotionally in recent months, though no one expected such a devastating turn of events.

Law Enforcement Investigation Continues

While officials have confirmed the incident as a murder-suicide, the Kern County Sheriff’s Office has stated that the investigation remains active and ongoing. Authorities are currently working to piece together the timeline leading up to the violence, including reviewing evidence from the scene, speaking with potential witnesses, and analyzing forensic details.

“At this stage, it appears this was an isolated incident with no ongoing threat to the public,” a spokesperson for KCSO said in a press release. “We extend our deepest condolences to the families and loved ones affected by this tragedy.”

Authorities have not yet disclosed a possible motive behind the incident, but they confirmed that the two individuals were known to each other and had reportedly been in a relationship.

A Growing Concern: Domestic Violence in Kern County

This case adds to a troubling pattern of domestic violence-related deaths in Kern County in recent years. Local advocacy groups have voiced renewed concern over the rising number of domestic incidents that end in tragedy. According to the most recent data, Kern County has one of the highest rates of domestic violence fatalities in the state of California.

“This is a heartbreaking reminder of how urgent it is to address domestic violence and mental health issues in our community,” said Lisa Moreno, director of a local women’s shelter in Bakersfield. “We need more preventative services, support systems, and safe spaces for victims.”

Remembering the Victims

Jasmine Hernandez Ascencio is being remembered by family and friends as a devoted sister and a caring friend with a kind soul. She reportedly worked in the service industry and was known for her infectious smile and dedication to her loved ones. Her family has asked for privacy during this time but has confirmed they plan to hold a vigil in her honor in the coming days.

Joshua Anthony Reveles, whose life also ended in tragedy, had no known criminal record and was described by some friends as a quiet individual who kept to himself. Others close to him acknowledged that he had battled depression but were unaware of any signs pointing to such extreme violence.
