BALDWIN PARK, CA – June 1, 2025 — Authorities have identified the Baldwin Park police officer who was tragically killed in a deadly shootout on Saturday night as Officer Samuel Riveros, a respected 9-year veteran of the department known for his dedication to community safety.

The violence unfolded around 7:21 p.m. on May 31, when officers responded to multiple reports of a man firing a rifle in a residential area along the 4200 block of Filhurst Avenue. Upon arrival, officers were met with immediate gunfire.

When officers arrived, they were met by gunfire,” said Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna during a late-night press conference. In the ensuing chaos, Officer Riveros and another officer were struck. One was airlifted and the other transported by ambulance to USC Medical Center. Despite extensive life-saving efforts, Officer Riveros succumbed to his injuries.

The second officer, whose identity has not yet been made public, is currently hospitalized in stable condition and surrounded by loved ones.

Law enforcement returned fire during the gunfight, striking the suspect — an adult male — who was taken into custody and remains in stable condition at a local hospital.

Tragically, a second victim, believed to be a civilian, was also found dead at the scene with fatal gunshot wounds. Authorities believe the suspect may have killed the civilian prior to officers’ arrival. The identity of the civilian has not yet been released.

Surveillance video and witness accounts reveal the sheer terror residents faced. Partygoers and neighbors were seen running for cover as bullets tore through the quiet neighborhood. One resident described the moment as “unreal,” sharing how his car windshield was shattered during the barrage of gunfire.

Crowds gathered in shock as the area was sealed off overnight. Officers and deputies maintained a strong presence at the scene as investigators combed through evidence.

Baldwin Park Police Chief Robert Lopez spoke emotionally about Officer Riveros, calling him “an amazing man” and a selfless protector of the community.

“This is an extremely tragic loss for our department and our city,” said Chief Lopez. “I ask the community to remember the officers and deputies who put themselves in harm’s way each and every day.”

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department continues to lead the investigation into the shooting. While initial rumors suggested the possibility of a second suspect, officials have not confirmed any such involvement at this time.

As the Baldwin Park community mourns this devastating loss, plans for a public memorial for Officer Riveros are expected to be announced in the coming days.
