TRAGEDY ON I-86: 67-Year-Old John Taylor Killed in Wrong-Way Crash with Canadian Trucker Imran Shahid
Horseheads, NY – June 2, 2025 — A devastating crash on the Southern Tier Expressway claimed the life of a 67-year-old man, identified as John Taylor, in a violent head-on collision with a tractor-trailer Monday afternoon.
According to New York State Police, the fatal incident occurred at approximately 12:15 p.m. near Exit 58 on Interstate 86, when a 2002 Chevrolet sedan driven by Taylor was traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes — heading the wrong way.
Troopers from SP Horseheads, already patrolling the area, came upon the crash scene moments after the impact. Authorities say Taylor’s sedan collided head-on with a 2024 Volvo tractor-trailer operated by 44-year-old Imran Shahid of Canada.
The crash caused severe front-end damage to both vehicles. Tragically, Taylor, the sole occupant of the Chevrolet, was pronounced dead at the scene by the Chemung County Medical Examiner.
Shahid was treated at the scene for minor injuries and did not require hospitalization.
The crash shut down the eastbound lanes of I-86 for several hours while investigators from the New York State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit examined the scene. All lanes were later reopened to traffic.
At this time, officials are investigating how and why Taylor entered the highway in the wrong direction. They are considering all possible factors, including a potential medical episode or driver confusion. No criminal charges are anticipated.
Authorities continue to urge drivers to remain alert and report wrong-way vehicles immediately. This tragic incident serves as a sobering reminder of how quickly a single mistake on the highway can lead to fatal consequences.
John Taylor’s name was released late Monday after notification of his next of kin. He was a longtime area resident remembered for his quiet nature and kindness to neighbors. Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced later this week.
