Tragedy on East Lincoln: 19-Year-Old Ishmael Rios Killed in Hobbs Shooting, Manhunt Underway for Suspect Michael Garcia

HOBBS, NEW MEXICO — A devastating act of violence has shaken the community of Hobbs after a Friday night shooting left a 19-year-old man dead and another individual injured. According to the Hobbs Police Department (HPD), officers responded to a report of gunfire in the 800 block of East Lincoln Street around nightfall on June 6, 2025.

Upon arrival, officers discovered two individuals suffering from gunshot wounds. Emergency medical personnel administered life-saving aid and rushed both victims to Covenant Health Hobbs Hospital. One victim, whose identity has not been released, was later airlifted to a hospital in Texas for further care and has since been released from medical supervision.

Tragically, the second victim, 19-year-old Ishmael Rios, a resident of Hobbs, did not survive. He was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the hospital. News of his passing has sent shockwaves through the community, where Ishmael was remembered as a bright and kind-hearted young man with a future full of promise.

“This is a heartbreaking loss,” said a family friend. “Ishmael was deeply loved, and this senseless act has left a hole in all of our hearts.”

Through their investigation, HPD quickly identified a suspect: 20-year-old Michael Alonzo Wynne Garcia, also of Hobbs. Witnesses reported that Garcia fled the scene in a red Toyota Camry, bearing New Mexico license plate TYL7444, and has not been seen since.

Authorities attempted to intercept Garcia shortly after the shooting, but he eluded capture. He is now the subject of an active manhunt and is considered armed and dangerous. An arrest warrant has been issued, and Garcia is facing multiple felony charges, including:

  • First-Degree Murder
  • Aggravated Battery with a Deadly Weapon
  • Aggravated Fleeing from a Law Enforcement Officer

In a statement Saturday morning, HPD Chief John Ortolano called on the public to assist in locating Garcia. “We are exhausting every resource to bring this suspect into custody,” he said. “We need the community’s help. If you see Michael Garcia or have any knowledge of his whereabouts, please do not approach him—call police immediately.”

Members of the public can share information by contacting the Hobbs Police Department at (575) 397-9265 or Lea County Crime Stoppers at (575) 393-8005. Anonymous tips are welcomed and could qualify for a cash reward.

As the investigation continues, friends and relatives of Ishmael Rios are gathering to remember him. A memorial vigil is being planned in his honor in the coming days.

This shooting is the latest in a troubling pattern of gun violence in Hobbs, prompting renewed calls from local leaders for unity, intervention, and solutions.

“This tragedy must not become just another headline,” said one city official. “We must come together, support Ishmael’s family, and work toward making our streets safer for everyone.”
