Waterloo Community Mourns as 33-Year-Old Dipree Devante Jones Fatally Shot Near Ryder Logistics
Waterloo, IA – March 27, 2025 – A sense of grief and shock has gripped the Waterloo community following the tragic shooting of 33-year-old Dipree Devante Jones, who was gunned down in a parking lot near Ryder Logistics on Wednesday night. Authorities have since arrested 21-year-old Martavious J’Qualin Reed, who now faces first-degree murder charges in connection with the fatal shooting.
Deadly Confrontation in the Parking Lot
According to the Waterloo Police Department, officers responded to reports of gunfire in the 3400 block of East Shaulis Road at approximately 9:45 p.m. Upon arrival, they discovered Jones suffering from multiple gunshot wounds in the parking lot near the Ryder Logistics facility.
Emergency medical personnel attempted lifesaving measures, but Jones succumbed to his injuries at the scene. Witnesses reported hearing several rounds of gunfire before seeing a vehicle speed away from the area.
“It was chaos,” said one witness who wished to remain anonymous. “We heard the shots, and when we looked outside, we saw someone on the ground. It was terrifying.”
Suspect Apprehended and Charged
Following an intensive overnight investigation, law enforcement officers were able to identify and locate the suspected shooter, Martavious J’Qualin Reed. Authorities arrested Reed early Thursday morning without incident.
In a Thursday afternoon press conference, Waterloo Police Chief Joel Fitzgerald confirmed that Reed and Jones were known to each other, but the motive behind the shooting remains under investigation.
“This was not a random act of violence,” Fitzgerald stated. “We believe there was a prior dispute between the two individuals that escalated tragically. Our detectives are working diligently to piece together the details.”
Reed has been booked into the Black Hawk County Jail, where he is being held without bond on charges of first-degree murder.
Community Shock and Grief
Jones, a beloved son, father, and friend, was known for his kind-hearted nature and strong work ethic. His untimely passing has devastated those who knew him.
“Dipree was an amazing person who always looked out for others,” said his cousin, Latasha Johnson. “He loved his family, and he didn’t deserve this. Our hearts are shattered.”
Friends and family have organized a candlelight vigil in honor of Jones on Friday evening at 7 p.m., near the location where he lost his life. Community leaders and faith-based organizations are also calling for an end to gun violence, urging residents to seek peaceful resolutions to conflicts.
Authorities Urge Public Assistance
While the primary suspect has been arrested, investigators are still seeking additional witnesses who may have information regarding the shooting.
“If you were in the area that night or have any knowledge about the events leading up to this tragedy, please come forward,” urged Detective Michael Carter. “Even the smallest detail could be crucial in ensuring justice for Mr. Jones and his family.”
Anyone with relevant information is encouraged to contact the Waterloo Police Department at (319) 291-2515 or provide an anonymous tip through Cedar Valley Crime Stoppers.
A Call for Change

“We cannot continue to lose our loved ones to violence,” said Pastor Raymond Douglas of New Hope Baptist Church. “We need to come together, find solutions, and protect our young people before it’s too late.”
