PENROSE, CO — A tragic accident unfolded on Monday afternoon, June 9, 2025, along Colorado Highway 115 near Penrose, claiming the life of a juvenile passenger in a serious collision between a passenger vehicle and a semi-truck, according to the Colorado State Patrol (CSP).
The crash occurred shortly after 3 p.m. at a location known for its challenging curves and limited visibility. Preliminary investigations by CSP indicate that the passenger vehicle, carrying several occupants including the young victim, collided with a semi-truck traveling in the opposite direction. The exact circumstances leading to the crash remain under active investigation.
Emergency personnel arrived swiftly at the scene to provide immediate aid. Despite their best efforts, the juvenile passenger sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. The identities of the victim and other passengers have not been released as authorities work to notify next of kin. Several others involved in the crash suffered injuries and were transported to local medical facilities for treatment. The driver of the semi-truck reportedly sustained minor injuries.
Colorado State Patrol officials have closed both directions of Highway 115 temporarily to allow for thorough investigation and clearing of the wreckage. Traffic was redirected through local routes, causing delays throughout the afternoon.
Lieutenant Maria Sanchez of CSP expressed condolences, stating, “This is a deeply tragic incident. Our thoughts are with the family and community affected by this heartbreaking loss. We urge all drivers to exercise caution and remain vigilant on our roadways.”
Community members expressed shock and sorrow in response to the news. Local resident Mark Delaney said, “This part of the highway is tough to navigate, but it’s always heartbreaking when something like this happens so close to home.”
Authorities are continuing their investigation to determine the exact cause of the collision, considering factors such as road conditions, vehicle speeds, and driver actions. Officials encourage anyone with information to contact the Colorado State Patrol.
As the community mourns, plans for memorial services are expected to be announced in the coming days once the family is ready.
This tragic incident serves as a sober reminder of the importance of road safety, especially on rural highways shared by passenger vehicles and large commercial trucks.
