Minnesota Lawmakers John Hoffman and Melissa Hortman Targeted in Overnight Shootings; Statewide Manhunt Underway
CHAMPLIN & BROOKLYN PARK, Minn. — June 14, 2025
In a shocking and deeply unsettling event, two Minnesota lawmakers were targeted in separate overnight shootings at their homes in the Minneapolis suburbs of Champlin and Brooklyn Park. The incidents, confirmed early Saturday morning by Governor Tim Walz and U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar, have prompted an urgent, coordinated response by state and local law enforcement agencies.
The victims were identified as State Senator John Hoffman and State Representative Melissa Hortman, both influential members of the Minnesota Democratic–Farmer–Labor Party (DFL). The attacks appear to have been deliberate, targeting the lawmakers in what officials are treating as an act of political violence.
Senator Klobuchar expressed shock and concern in her social media statement:
“This is a stunning act of violence. I’m thankful for all the law enforcement who are responding in real time. My prayers are with the Hortman and Hoffman families. Both legislators are close friends and devoted to their families and public service.”
Governor Walz has responded swiftly by activating the State Emergency Operations Center and is currently on the scene to oversee the law enforcement response. His spokesperson, Teddy Tschann, confirmed that a Joint Information Center has been established to facilitate communication between agencies and keep the public informed.
“Local law enforcement in Champlin and Brooklyn Park have the full resources of the State of Minnesota behind them,” Walz posted on X. “We are monitoring the situation closely and will share more information soon.”
Following the shootings, the Brooklyn Park Police Department issued a shelter-in-place order covering a three-mile radius around the Edinburgh Golf Course, near one of the attack locations. The directive remains in effect as tactical units and local officers conduct thorough searches for any suspects or evidence.
The Minnesota Department of Public Safety and the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension have joined local law enforcement to lead the ongoing investigation. At this time, officials have not disclosed whether either legislator sustained injuries or the motive behind the attacks.
National Outcry Over Attack on Public Officials
The incidents drew swift condemnation nationwide. Former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords, a gun violence prevention advocate and survivor of a 2011 assassination attempt, released a heartfelt statement:
“I am horrified and heartbroken by last night’s attack on two patriotic public servants. An attack against lawmakers is an attack on American democracy itself. Leaders must speak out and condemn the violent extremism that threatens everything this country stands for.”
Both Hoffman and Hortman are veteran lawmakers known for their dedication to public service, championing key issues including education reform, healthcare, and community development in Minnesota.
Community Reacts With Shock and Calls for Unity
Residents in Champlin and Brooklyn Park expressed disbelief and sorrow at the violence. Local resident Clara Dawson stated, “This is not who we are as Minnesotans. We may have our differences, but attacking public servants and their families is beyond unacceptable.”
Governor Walz is scheduled to hold a press conference later this morning to provide further updates as the investigation unfolds.
Authorities urge the public to stay vigilant, follow any safety directives issued, and report any suspicious activity to local law enforcement immediately.
Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
